James Beattie, (1735 - 1803) was a Scottish poet, moralist, & philosopher. 'The Minstrel; or, The Progress of Genius' was originally published in two volumes, in 1771 and 1774. This later edition from 1814, complete in one volume, contains some of his other poetry and notes on the Minstrel.
