Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. First Edition. Octavo, 337pp., plus advertisements. A very good copy in the publisher's green cloth. A few internal signatures partly loosened, but intact. Contents otherwise crisp, clean and bright. Pencilled owner's name on the front free endpaper. This is the first issue, with the *spoiler alert!* main character's suicide by gunshot on pp. 335-6. John Hay rightly surmised that the money-grubbing antagonist in the novel was based on his father-in-law Amasa Stone, and he bought up every copy he could, finally suing Appleton to suppress the book. Appleton reprinted it with a less-gruesome ending.

Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Collectible; VG. First Edition. This hardcover book is square and tight. The boards and spine have only minor wear to the points and edges with pristine lettering. Really Fine in light of its age. The pages and endpages are clean, with no markings or folds. The front free end page is neatly excised. Not ex-lib. No remainder mark. This is a First State of the First Edition (with an account of the millionaire shooting himself on page 335). This book was a response to the John Hay's anti-labor novel, "The Bread Winners". It paraphrased the career of Hay's father-in-law whose engineering enterprises had caused great loss of life, accurately portraying his suicide, and using a similar name. Hay sued, and the book was suppressed. The publishers then issued an altered version. There is no consensus indicating how many copies of the original printing offered here survived. Scarce and beautifully preserved.
