Als sich 1969 fünf britische Komiker mit einem amerikanischen Filmregisseur und Drehbuchautor unter dem Namen 'Monty Python' zusammenschließen, ahnt noch keiner, wie erfolgreich diese Truppe werden wird. John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin und Terry Gilliam produzieren zunächst eine außergewöhnliche Comedy Show namens 'Monty Python's Flying Circus'. Die Show besteht aus lose zusammenhängenden Sketchen. Aufgrund des absurden, ungewöhnlichen, oft schwarzen und sehr britischen Humors, trifft die Komikertruppe allerdings auf sehr geteilte Meinungen. Die einen lieben sie, die anderen hassen sie. Letzen Endes sorgt aber die, gerade bei jungen Leuten, hohe Begeisterung für Monty Python dafür, dass die Show nicht abgesetzt wird und insgesamt vier Staffeln produziert werden. Außerdem wenden sich die Pythons auch dem Filmgeschäft zu und produzieren nach und nach drei Filme: 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail', 'Life of Brian' und 'The Meaning of Life'. Alle drei sind immer noch erfolgreich und gelten heutzutage für viele Leute fast als Kulturgut. Jedoch waren die Pythons auch heftiger Kritik ausgesetzt: So gab es Zuschauer, die ihnen vorwarfen, sie wären vulgär und ihre Witze flach. Gerade nach 'Life of Brian' schlug ihnen eine Welle der Empörung von Seiten der Kirche entgegen. Es fällt also auf, dass der Humor von Monty Python scheinbar nicht immer (sofort) 'funktioniert' und dass es durchaus eine Weile dauern kann, bis man dahinter kommt, was eigentlich gerade so lustig ist. Daher stellt sich die Frage: 'Wie genau funktioniert der Humor von Monty Python '. In ihren Sketchen spielt die nicht immer auf eine Pointe hinauslaufende Dramaturgie eine Rolle, andererseits aber auch Tabubrüche, Übertreibungen und schwarzer Humor. In ihren Filmen kommen vor allem Anachronismen, Juxtapositionen, sowie Dekonstruktion und Entmystifizierung zum Einsatz. In dieser Arbeit beschäftige ich mich mit den Filmen 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' und 'Monty Python's Life of Brian' und ziehe jeweils drei Szenen als Analysebeispiel für die oben genannten Humorelemente heran.
