Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. New Edition. A new edition - published 1895. 'A Woman in White' was first published in the UK in 1859-60 in serialised form in Charles Dickens' magazine "All the Year Round". It was then published in book form in 1860 by Sampson Low, Son, & Co. as a 3-volume work. ***'The Moonstone' was first published in the UK in 1868 in serialised form in Charles Dickens' magazine "All the Year Round". It was published later the same year in book form by Tinsley Brothers as a 3-volume work. Nineteenth century editions are all quite uncommon. Text is in double columns to reduce the size of the book. ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine, and gilt titles and decoration to front board. Most of the gilt has oxidised, but there are remnants on the front board. Edges of boards are rubbed, especially at the top rear corner. The boards are quite darkened through handling. The spine is intact, without any tears that are usually found at the head of the spine with titles of this age. The interior hinges are intact without splitting, which is also unusual for books of this age. Endpapers and pastedowns are foxed, but the interior pages are clean. There is a contemporary printed prize bookplate to the front pastedown - "Ashton-in-Makerfield, L.S.A. Prize April 29th, 1896". ***225mm x 155mm. The Woman in White (238 pages), The Moomstone (190 pages) plus a 32pp publisher's catalogue at the rear. The catalogue is dated Feb. 1896. ***'William Wilkie Collins (8 Jan 1824 - 23 Sep 1889) was an English novelist, playwright and short story writer best known for The Woman in White (1859) and The Moonstone (1868). The last has been called the first modern English detective novel. Born to the family of a painter, William Collins, in London, he grew up in Italy and France. He began work as a clerk for a tea merchant. After his first novel, Antonina, appeared in 1850, he met Charles Dickens, who became a close friend and mentor. Some of Collins' works appeared first in Dickens's journals "All the Year Round" and "Household Words" and they collaborated together on drama and fiction.' [Wiki] ***'The Woman in White was Wilkie Collins's fifth published novel, written in 1859. It is considered to be among the first mystery novels and is widely regarded as one of the first (and finest) in the genre of "sensation novels". The story is sometimes considered to be an early example of detective fiction, with protagonist Walter Hartright employing many of the sleuthing techniques of later private detectives. The use of multiple narrators (including nearly all the principal characters) draws on Collins's legal training, and as he points out in his preamble: "the story here presented will be told by more than one pen, as the story of an offence against the laws is told in Court by more than one witness". ***'The Moonstone (1868) by Wilkie Collins is a 19th-century British epistolary novel. It is an early modern example of the detective novel, and established many of the ground rules of the modern genre.' [Wiki] ***A new edition of Wilkie Collins famous novel "The Woman in White", published as a single volume, bound together with "The Moonstone". ***A very nice antiquarian, Victorian edition of Wlikie Collins' two classic works, bound together in one volume. It is uncommon to find Victorian editions of Wilkie Collins' novels now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
