Group of extremely scarce sheet music scores for five Bop classics: small group parts for "Moose the Mooche", "Yardbird Suite", and "Confirmation"; piano solo versions for "Moose the Mooche" and "Ornithology" (two copies). The only title in the Wee-Bop Series located at institutional libraries is Illinois Jacquet's "Robbin's Nest", cited on WorldCat at Cleveland Public Library; we have traced copies of "Confirmation" and "Yardbird Suite" at the Library of Congress, along with the piano solo for "Ornithology". The examples illustrated by the scrupulously maintained Parker website birdparkerslegacy are the present ones, from the celebrated collection of Norman Saks. These tunes, all composed by Bird, comprise some of the standards of the Bebop repertoire, "authentically arranged", so the blurb states, by Van Alexander, for two altos, tenor, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drums, guitar, "or any combination of the above". Van Alexander (1915-2015) started arranging for Chick Webb at 19 and is best remembered as the composer of the Ella Fitzgerald hit "A-Tisket, A-Tasket", later pursuing a highly successful career as a composer for film and television. "He worked with Benny Goodman and Billie Holiday, among other musicians, and scored films, like Babyface Nelson (1957), which starred Mickey Rooney, and Strait-Jacket (1964), with Joan Crawford" (New York Times obituary, 29 July 2019, retrieved 18 June 2019). "Yardbird Suite" without the guitar part; "Confirmation" without the guitar and piano parts; stamps of "Bernard Augins, Musical Instrument Service, Rochester, NY" to front wrapper of two scores. Some internal soiling and staining to "Yardbird Suite" and "Confirmation", one of the scores of "Ornithology" a little ragged at lower edge and with a few musical annotations across some 14 bars. Overall in remarkably good condition.
