John Murray Publishers, London 1948 First edition 132pp Illustrated Hardback. The Times described the Murray's Guides as being 'born of affection and sensibility and knowledge which will acquaint us with many delightful and valuable buildings'. Just three Murrays Guides were published, Buckinghamshire in 1948, Berkshire in 1949 and Lancashire in 1955, Both Buckingham and Berkshire were written by Betjeman many of the photographs and the uniform dustwrapper artwork were done by Piper. They were edited jointly by John Betjeman and John Piper as were the early Shell Guides and they came at a time when the flow of new Shell Guides had faltered. Sadly publication of these authoritive and enthusiastic guides ceased when the Shell Guides were re launched and Betjeman and later Piper returned to editing these. This copy is in exceptional condition having been kept in a glass fronted book case since purchase in a smoke free home. There is some unconnected notation to the rear endpaper. The unclipped dust wrapper is in exceptional condition, It is now protected with removable mylar clear film. Ref C 1.…
