Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition, Special Edition. William Burroughs Naked Lunch Signed First American Edition/Stated First Printing in a 1st state dust jacket with no zip code on back panel. A Fine book in a Fine dust jacket. Flat SIGNED with no inscription by the author on the title page. A pristine copy of this notorious novel that was banned in many cities due to it's obscene language; also considered one of the great novels of the 20th century (The novel was included in Time's "100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005"). Very scarce in this condition, particularly signed. This copy is in fine condition with a square, tight binding, bright gold lettering over black and gray boards, and clean white pages throughout; only very light rubbing to the board edges and a couple of light spots to the exterior text block keep this from as new condition. Housed in a clean, crisp, fine dust jacket that exhibits no flaws; an absolutely gorgeous copy and thus scarce indeed. Not remaindered, not price clipped ($6.00 intact), in a protective mylar cover. First edition. Inscribed first issue ofBig Tablecontaining "Ten Episodes from Naked Lunch" which was published by Irving Rosenthal after he left the Chicago Review due to censorship by the University. A lovely association, this copy signed for legendary Greenwich Village book dealer who owned Greenwich Books and the Rare Book Room, Roger Richards. Greenwich books was a haven for the Beats and other literary figures in midcentury New York. Richards was close with Burroughs, Corso, Ginsberg, and was a regular at Andy Warhol's Factory. The story behind this inscription, from the third party for whom it was intended, was: Richards met Burroughs at the Chelsea Hotel, where he was living, to have a few items inscribed for a longtime client. The two old friends ended up hanging out and decided to get stoned. The first item,Big Table, was mistakenly inscribed to Richards before Burroughs got it right for the others. An iconic piece of Beat Generation history with a nice association from someone who had a large hand in it. . 8vo, 152, [6]pp. Signed and inscribed by Burroughs to Roger Richards at the Hotel Chelsea, N.Y. on pg 79. Publisher's red, blue, and white wrappers, spine slightly cocked and showing a few spots of soiling. Very good or better. Laid in is a Rare Book Room, Greenwich catalogue from Richards.

Inscribed on the title page reading "For Dick Gabler", signed William Burroughs, and dated '6/12/1992'. DL consignment. Shelved Case 6. William S. Burroughs was born February 5, 1914 in St. Louis, Missouri to the prominent Burroughs family, his grandfather founding the Burroughs Corporation. He took a very early interest in magic and the occult, claiming visions of grey apparitions and a green reindeer as a child. Burroughs lived in Vienna, Austria for a time following his graduation from Harvard, taking part in its underground gay culture moving amongst circles of gays, exiles, and runaways amidst whom he met Isle Klapper, a German Jewish woman fleeing the Nazi regime. The pair became close friends, marrying so Klapper could get a visa to the United States, after which they divorced, remaining friends for years afterwards. After a brief stint in the military, Burroughs parents grew increasingly worried about his mental health. Burroughs had a string of odd-jobs before leaving to New York City with some friends from St. Louis. During his time in New York, Burroughs would become addicted to morphine, dealing heroin to feed the habit, and began a relationship with a woman named Joan Vollmer Adams who would become his common-law wife after Burroughs divorce from Klapper. The pair would live in Mexico until 1951 when Burroughs shot Vollmer, killing her and getting their children taken into custody by their respective grandparents. This was a pivotal moment for Burroughs, solidifying a nonlinear method of writing first truly seen in "Naked Lunch". Burroughs had written before "Naked Lunch", publishing "Junkie" in 1953 and writing "Queer" between 1951-1953, which wouldn't see publication until 1985. "Naked Lunch" was written by Burroughs in Tangiers where he had settled in 1954. "Naked Lunch," published in 1959, received very mixed reviews upon publication. Proponents of the novel called it a satire in the vein of Jonathan Swift while critics called it obscene trash. The novel was very controversial for it's depictions of drug use and body horror, being considered obscene by the U.S. Post Office, the state of Massachusetts, and the city of Los Angeles which sparked a landmark censorship case which saw the courts initially label the book too obscene to be sold, a decision which was overturned by the Supreme Court. It is considered by many a dystopian science fiction and has inspired the rock and cyberpunk genres.
