Hardcover. 4to. Black cloth with silver spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. xxii, 122pp. Frontispiece, extensive full-page illustrations. Fine/fine. Pristine first edition of the noted Chicago photographer's images of his friend and collaborator, famed novelist Nelson Algren (1909-81) -- black and white photos often portraying the seamy side of life in Chicago, an aspect often depicted in Algren's fiction. Not only has Shay (1922-2018) signed the title page in blue ballpoint, but this special copy bears a fine autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a heavy stock 6" X 4" picture postcard (picturing "Danse et Magie" French theatre poster). Neither addressed nor mailed, the message/address side bears an Autograph Note Signed from Algren in his huge script and usual later life thick green marker: Dear Carol, / I hope the season / brings every happiness / to you and yours / Nelson / Algren," and at lower left he sketches the back side of a seated cat in green, yellow and blue marker. (Carol Phillips, 1922-2016, created the Clinique skin care cosmetics line and was a top Estee Lauder figure.) A lovely and most unusual copy.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. First Edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by Art Shay to Hugh Hefner on the title page and again on page 34, below Shay's 1968 portrait of Hefner in his Chicago mansion. Also, laid in is a typed letter signed (TLS) written by Shay to Hefner on February 14, 2000. Shay mentions this book and his two contributions to Playboy before concluding: "I've had a pretty good career- but still wish Maurice English had never appeared to pre-empt your 'Chi' magazine.I'd have still been working for you." Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation. In an interview with the Capital Gazette following Hefner's death in 2017, Shay (1922-2018) recalled, "When Hugh Hefner was getting started he asked me to come work for him. He liked my pictures and was going to publish a magazine called 'Chi.' A professor named Maurice English beat him to it, and Hefner's second choice was Playboy." Quarto. Original black cloth binding, with silver titles. Negligible production error to the front hinge, with a minor crease to the front flap of the dust jacket; otherwise very good.
