In the original full tree calf, gilt lettered red Morocco label on spine. Spine gilt ruled. Leather cracked at front hinge (boards holding firm). For an unknown reason, top blank corners of p. 185-228 clipped. Leaves bright, with scattered foxing throughout (which is the case with every edition we've seen). Plates toned and browned (see images). Errata tipped in p. 71 of tables. A handsome book, in good condition. Nathaniel Bowditch, known as the founder of modern maritime navigation, first published the American Practical Navigator in Newburyport, Massachusetts by Edmund M. Blunt (1770-1862), in 1802. This edition (18th) is also printed by the same firm. The book went through many editions and is still published today and used today by the United States Navy. The volume offered here is complete and in the original binding. See images.

Bound in with the "Navigator" is the rare "Appendix" in which Bowditch corrects the instructions on p.180 of his "Practical Navigator" for calculating the distance of the moon from the sun or a star.
