Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Spanish conquest and colonisation of the Americas dramatically transformed the lives of native peoples in Mesoamerica and the Andes. This revolutionary and multilayered process varied greatly in its intensity and timing from region to region, but in all cases radically changed indigenous societies, their values and beliefs. The encounter between native peoples and the Spanish conquistadors and later settlers was marked by violence and drastic, epidemic-driven population decline. This dislocatory phase gradually gave way to myriad forms of accommodation, resistance, and social, cultural and religious hybridity -- the colonial heritage of Spanish America. The innovative essays in this volume compare the colonial experience of native peoples of the conquered Aztec, Maya and Inca civilisations, from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. They highlight their creative responses to the challenges posed by colonial rule, its institutions, religion, and legal and economic systems. Interdisciplinary in approach, the essays distil a generation of scholarship and suggest an agenda for future research. This book will be of great interest to historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, and post-colonialists.…

Full calf leather binding, rubbed and worn with loss, gilt titles to black labels, gilt decoration to the compartments, rubbed, worn and marked with loss to the spine, nicely patinated calf boards with gilt ruled decoration, cracking spine joints, front joint with some loss to the leather, hinges (internally) cracked through in parts, pages tanned with marks and minor foxing. This is the scarce 1811 First Edition William Hales (8 April 1747 30 January 1831) was an Irish clergyman and scientific writer. He was born in Cork, Ireland, the son of Samuel Hales, the curate at the cathedral church there. He went to Trinity College, Dublin in 1764 and became a fellow there, graduating with a BA and DD. He later became professor of oriental languages in the university. In 1778 he published Sonorum doctrina rationalis et experimentalis a study, based on experiments, of Newton's theory of sounds. In 1782 he published De motibus planetarum dissertatio, another study of Newtonian theory, this time on the motions of the planets in eccentric orbits. In 1788 he had printed at his own expense Analysis aequationum, a mathematical text for which he was complimented by Joseph Louis Lagrange. In 1788 Dr. Hales resigned as professor and became Church of Ireland rector of Killeshandra, county Cavan, and lived there for the rest of his life. In 1791 he married and he and his wife had two sons and two daughters. In 1798 he obtained government troops to regain control of the country round Killeshandra, following the landing by a French army at Killala. From about 1812 was chancellor of the diocese of Emly. His best-known work is A New Analysis of Chronology, which took twenty years to complete and was finally published in three volumes (1809 - 1812). In this book, which deals with the chronology of the whole Bible, Hales made it his rule as far as possible to use original sources. His other works include The Inspector, or, Select Literary Intelligence for the Vulgar and Irish Pursuits of Literature (both 1799), Methodism Inspected (18035), and Letters on the Tenets of the Romish Hierarchy (1813). From about 1820 or earlier he suffered from depression. He died in 1831. Pagination: xlii, [ii], xxiv, 611pp. Provenance: bookplate for Thomas Fitzgerald to the front paste down. [A remarkable album documents an Oregon Jehovah's Witness family's trek across the country to the 1950 Theocracy's Increase Assembly with 123,000 participants, the 1953 New World Assembly in New York, which featured more than 165,000 participants, with over 126,000 in Yankee Stadium, while another 50,000 listened to speeches, and participated in rallies at the trailer camp at New Market, New Jersey; as well as the Glad Nation's Theocratic Assembly in Cleveland, OH in 1946 which was the first of the JW Assemblies after World War II and featured over 80,000 participants. The Woods have included photos of the family stops at Hoover Dam, in Yellowstone Park, Pike's Peak, Crater Lake, Sutro Baths in San Francisco, together with many images of JW Kingdom Halls in various places across America, many different gas stations, and even an overturned semi on the highway].

In den WarenkorbOblong folio. 15.25 x 11.25 in. [88 pp (unpaginated)], on thick black paper, with 358 original photos tipped-in, sized from 2 x 3 in. up to 8 x 10 in., a few with pencil captions in margin above photos, a few with annotations on verso of photos, a few large ones with captions within the negative, 2 original postcards from Wally & Norman addressed to Mr. & Mrs. Reginald Fred Woods for the Paris and Wembley Stadium, London Assemblies in 1951. Contemporary embossed burgundy-coloured boards, post-binder, sewn at gutter margin with black silk braid, gilt lettering stamped on front cover (some edgewear, rubbing, a couple loose photos, loose postcards, occasional minor tears, a few photos removed, occasional tidemark to upper edge of a few photos), still a VG- exemplar. This fascinating photo album provides excellent visual documentation of the growth of the Jehovah's Witnesses Churches following World War II, and the gigantic international conventions sponsored by the Watch Tower Society in the 1940s and 1950s. The first of the New World Assemblies was held in Cleveland in the summer of 1946, with over 80,000 JW's in attendance, and proved so successful it inspired the three spectacular New York City conventions at Yankee Stadium in 1950, 1953, and 1958. These photos show the throngs of people in the stands, the synchronized celebrations on the baseball diamonds, people camping out in trailers, stopping at Kingdom Halls on the way to the conventions, vendors set up in tents, The Watchtower building in Brooklyn, NY, as well as a phenomenal image of a lighted Watchtower advertising sign strapped to the top of a car, with speakers attached, the vast trailer city in New Market, NJ stretching for miles, and more. The New York 1950 Theocracy's Increase Assembly saw the first presentation of the JW New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures, their own version of the New Testament, as well as Defending and Legally Establishing the Good News by Hayden Covington helping their door-to-door preachers resist police harassment. In addition, there are many photos showing Jehovah's Witness meetings, proselytizers wearing placards marching in front of Kingdom Halls, Businesses, Restaurants in such places as Oxnard, CA, Vancouver, WA, and more. The 1958 New York JW convention would be the last large international convention held. Although quite orderly, and peaceful, the local businesses were overworked, and the Jehovah's Witnesses were notoriously poor customers and tippers, and the vast throngs of visitors overwhelmed the facilities and public spaces in and around New York. This album also features the family stops at Hoover Dam, visiting Yellowstone Park with pictures of the geysers, and the black bears, a trip to Crater Lake, the Columbia River Gorge and Multnomah Falls, and even a series of photos at the end showing logging and building of a family cabin on the Oregon coast.
