Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. Color Photos (illustrator). 1st. Rubber stamp inside front cover, very light scuffing rear cover, otherwise as new condition. From the introduction: Origin of Federal Styles Although Americans had freed themselves politically, they were not ready for artistic independence. Like painters and architects of that time, they turned to England and France for inspiration. Federal furniture traces its origins to two British architects, Robert Adam and James Adam. Their book, Works in Architecture (1773-1779), depicts designs derived from the neoclassical style, a favorite of Louis XVI. A reaction against the elaborate rococo style of earlier eighteenth century European architecture, neoclassicism was influenced by Europe's and America's infatuation with archeological discoveries of Greek and Roman antiquities.
