Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Biological Nitrogen Fixation (BNF) and contribution to ecosystem by legumes has received a significant reviewed by researchers in the 21st century, with more priority given to soybeans and cowpeas. Little is known about the BNF potentials of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L)and also the variability existing among its cultivated lines as well as their possible response to added amendment and environmental stress such as moisture and temperature. It is important to note that, the mere existence of legumes in the soil does not translate to efficient BNF,but will depends on the crop residue management adopted by the farmer which will influence the soil nitrogen balance sheet, and subsequent contributions to the following non-legume crop grown after it. Hence, this book is a handy document intended to bridge such gap. The book centered on two major themes: (a)Symbiotic nitrogen fixation by groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) genotypes and nodulation as influence by starter inorganic nitrogen fertilizer and (b)Nitrogen contribution by groundnut genotypes to soil Nitrogen Balance. Interesting fact about the two sub themes are extensively discussed. 52 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Nitrogen is most often the limiting nutrient for crop production, since only a fraction of atmospheric nitrogen is made available to the plants through biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). Extending the BNF ability to non-legumes would be a useful technology for increased crop yields among resource-poor farmers. The idea that genetic manipulation techniques might be used to engineer crop plants to fix nitrogen is, of course, not new. However, the more we understand about the biochemistry and physiology of BNF, the less likely it seems that this goal will be achieved by simply' transferring the genes for nitrogen fixation to suitable crop species. Induction of nodulation has therefore been the main target of researchers over the past few years. 124 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Soybean is one of the most popular pulses in the world. Benefits of soybean cultivation over other grain legumes commonly grown by smallholders such as groundnuts, cowpea and common bean include lower susceptibility to pest and disease, better grain storage quality, large leaf biomass, gives a soil fertility benefits to subsequent crops and a secure commercial market for the crop. One major identified problem militating against successful soybean production in Africa is its poor nodulating ability with indigenous rhizobia strains. This problem is best rectified by the production and application of inoculant. Although inoculation is relatively simple and cost-effective for producing soybean, its technology is not available to the vast majority of peasant farmers in Africa. This study screened nine promiscuous and two non promiscuous soybean varieties in 22 soil series in Ghana for effective nodulation, isolating rhizobia from them, authenticate this rhizobia isolates and assessing the effectiveness of the isolates for inoculant production. The study also examined the effect of inoculation on nodulation, nodule dry weight, dry matter yield and total nitrogen fixation in six soils.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book provides a distinctive introduction to the soil fertility management knowledges and techniques required in the Biological Nitrogen Fixation. The strength of this work accrues from careful and clear Agronomic explanation and detailed coverage of all the necessary topics. It is the first known treatment in such a self-confident form. It requires no previous knowledge of microbiology, and is equally suitable for students in other disciplines needing microbiology, agronomy and soil sciences at this level.
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Land degradation is the principal environmental factor behind declining per capita food production in Sub-Saharan African. Causes include nutrient mining, sol erosion, poor land management and lack of resources. Thus, restoring soil fertility through build up of beneficial soil microbial population can be regarded as valuable coping strategy. Inoculation with rhizobia has the potential to increase dry matter yield, N yield, and residual N levels. However, it is not expected yield responses to inoculation universally in all areas. The response is highly dependent up on several factors amongst the presence of legume species and soil N levels prior to seeding are the two most important. This book in this regard will add a lot in addressing the potential impact of legume varieties in response to native or introduced soil microbial population for the preceding crop yields and/or soil fertility management in agricultural fields. Thus, inclusion of potential rhizobium spp. in legumes will have paramount importance for subsistence farmers who are unable to invest on the escalating price of inorganic fertilizers.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Over the last three decades, use of forage legumes in Ethiopia has increased exponentially to supplement protein requirement of ruminant animals. Some of these were Macroptilium atropurpureum,Desmodium, Stylosanthes, Lablab Purpureus, Vigna unguiculata, Vicia dasycarpa and Medicago sativa. For development purpose seeds have been imported from Australia, the Caribbean and Central America, Mediterranean and West Asia costing hundred thousand USD. Mostly, research on agronomic and adaptability of these legumes were undertaken by national and international institutes before releasing for development programs. However, it gradually became apparent that performance of many of the species has been found to be ambivalent so that some are failed to persist in the production system. The failure of these legumes could be as a result of absence of compatible and infective root nodule bacteria. So far, studies on nodulation and nitorgen fixation of these forage legumes have not been reported. This research book, therefore, provides invaluable data for researchers, development agents and livestock owners about the importance of compatible and effective indigenous rhizobia before importation.
