First edition thus, being the first edition in which the appendix relating to the murder of Logan's family, by Captain Cresap, was announced on the title-page" (Sabin, 35905). It's significant for revealing Jefferson's political philosophy, scientific interests, and complex and often controversial views on race, liberty, and American identity. Lacking the fold out map but retaining the frontispiece and the folding table of native tribes. Trenton: Printed for Wilson & Blackwell, 1803. In den WarenkorbEighth American edition (as claimed upon the title page). Hardcover: H 21.5cm x L 13.5cm. Collates as [frontis], 1-364, [rfep], [rp]. Contemporary leather boards and spine. Detached front board a tad oversized in comparison to rear board and thus not original to book (but retained as it was found); rear board detached as well but with its binding strings matching those on spine so original to book; both boards scuffed and stained with peeling to surface leather; spine chipped at ends with lengthwise strong vertical furrow causing slender loss to spine's original gilt lettered red title label. First leaf present is a toned/foxed and stained tenuously attached frontispiece portrait of Jefferson (uncredited but by Enoch G. Gridley) with torn top fore-edge corner; unfortunately only a remnant portion of foldout map is present between pages 4-5; Madison's Cave present on page 32; foldout table present between pages 138-139. Varied foxing/toning throughout with some stains and soiling; horizontal tears to pages 225-228. Text block remains firm. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing the boards and modestly enhances shelf presence. With two appendices, the first titled "Appendix" (pages 297-328) but with three sections - "No. 1" Charles Thompson's notes; "No. 2" Draught of a Fundamental Constitution for the Commonwealth of Virginia, and "No. 3" An Act for Establishing Religious Freedom followed by "Appendix, Relative to the Murder of Logan's Family." (pages 329-364). Sold as is with all faults - certainly needs to be re-cased. ***** This Boston-David Carlisle imprint was one of at least five 1801 editions issued to commemorate Jefferson's inauguration. The book was first published in Paris in 1785 with another Paris edition in 1786 and a London edition in 1787. American editions followed in 1788, 1794, and 1800. Acquired from a Hazlehurst, Copiah County, Mississippi estate with no preceding provenance known.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Notes on the State of Virginia. Written by Thomas Jefferson. Illustrated with a Map, including the States of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania. London: Printed for John Stockdale, opposite Burlington-House, Piccadilly. M.DCC.LXXXVII. 382 pages + small folding map at the front. Bound with: An Appendix to the Notes on Virginia Relative to the murder of Logan's Family. By Thomas Jefferson Philadelphia: Printed by Samuel H. Smith. M.D.CCC. 51 pages + map on the verso of the 51st page. ** Binding materials and condition: Bound in ¾ brown leather with marbled paper over boards. Maroon title label on the spine, "Jefferson[s] Notes" chipped at the right side. 5 gold rules on the spine. Front cover and first blank page detached but present. Rear cover attached by 1 cord only. The binding is likely to be original to the combination of the 2 separately printed books; circa 1800-1810, as the 18th/early 19th century owner's name is on both boards. Front hinge was held together with tape at some point; its removal has left a whitish stripe along the right edge of the spine. In addition, the top layer of leather peeled off along the inner edge of the front board when the tape was removed. Rubbing to the marbled paper. Text block/binding is tight throughout. The pages have various small instances of spotting and from age, foxing, and handling. In addition, there are noticeable stains from moisture that deserve special notice: Inside front cover, front blank, second blank, folded map have a stain on the top right corner, extending about 3 inches from the corner and making a triangle. The stain continues onto the title page and first 2 pages of text at the front, but much diminished (about 3" at the top and 1" on the outer edge, and much less distinct). The same stain in the same spot reemerges on the title page of the Appendix and continues to the end, growing fairly prominent by the 23/23rd page of the Appendix and darkening slowly by the end of the text and including the rear blank and inside back cover. The moisture is also visible at the fore-edge, although it is most noticeable when you already know about the stain inside. Viewed closed, the fore-edge stain is hardly different from the overall darkening of the fore-edges. Interior markings: There is an early bookplate with printed border on the inside front cover, Wm. Priestman No. 266 ARCH STREET, PHILADELPHIA. No. 1983 948 [numbers handwritten] In addition, there are a few pencil notes on the inside front cover. "$3.00" on the upper left corner of front cover. "London 1787. Appendix Philad. 1800" on upper portion of inside front cover. "Lot 70" beneath bookplate. First blank page has the name "Dr. W.W. Evans" written in pencil. Inside back cover has the name "Wm. Priestman. Philadelphia" written very neatly in black ink. The Map: The folding map at the front is the 1795/1800 version of Joseph Scott's map. (reference: William Woolridge's "Mapping Virginia." Page 192. Shows both the 1795 map and the 1800 reissue.) It measures 8" x 9" [plate measures 6.5" x 7.5"]. Moisture stain at the top, mostly in the margin. Virginia, as it was in 1800, outlined in blue. Most copies of the Stockdale edition included a large version of the Jefferson/Neele map. That map is not present here. It is clear from the water stain that the Scott map bound into this edition has been with it a long time, likely going all the way back to the time when the 1787 Notes was bound into this single volume with the 1800 Appendix. The 1800 map was American-made, and it is not unreasonable to think that the binder added it from bookstore stock during the binding process. It would have been at the time, the best readily-available map. Please email with questions, to request photos, or for further information on William Priestman or the printing history of the Notes.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 3rd Edition. 8vo., 392 pages, fine engraved portrait frontispiece of Thomas Jefferson by John Scholes (and pictured in Cunningham's 'The Image of Thomas Jefferson in the Public Eye'), full-page "eye draught" of Madsion's Cave and folding chart listing Indian tribes, as well as Jefferson's draft of the Virginia Constitution, "Act of Religious Freedom," and Appendix to the Murder of Logan's Family, which only appears in editions beginning in 1800, bound in handsome contemporary full speckled calf with contrasting red morocco title label to spine. A generally excellent complete copy with the Appendix, internally clean in a handsome contemporary binding which is regarded as one of America's first permanent literary and intellectual landmarks. Ex Libris Jean-Guillaume, Baron Hyde de Neuville (24 January 1776 - 28 May 1857) the renowned French aristocrat, diplomat, and politician, with his engraved bookplate to upper pastedown. NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA is the only book-length work by Thomas Jefferson to be published in his lifetime. It has been called "one of America's first permanent literary and intellectual landmarks." It was largely written in 1781 and first published in Paris, in French, in 1785. The work is both a compilation of data by Jefferson about the state's natural resources and economy, and his vigorous and often eloquent argument about the nature of the good society, which he believed was incarnated by Virginia. He expressed his beliefs in the separation of church and state, constitutional government, checks and balances, and individual liberty. He wrote extensively about slavery, the problems of miscegenation, and his belief that whites and blacks could not live together in a free society. A very scarce imprint, this printed version is identical to the 1801 New York/London editions. It is interesting to note that Jefferson's first term (1801-1805), Vice President, Aaron Burr, was from Newark which might account for an edition of this work being published there at that time."During the American Revolution, when Jefferson said 'my country' he meant Virginia" (Malone I:xiii). "Notes on the State of Virginia laid the foundations of Jefferson's high contemporary reputation as a universal scholar and of his present fame as a pioneer American scientist this extraordinarily informing and generally interesting book may still be consulted with profit about the geography and productions, the social and political life, of 18th-century Virginia. With ardent patriotism as well as zeal for truth Jefferson combated the theories of Buffon and Raynal in regard to the degeneracy of animal and intellectual life in America, and he manifested great optimism in regard to the future of the country, but he included strictures on slavery and the government of Virginia" (ANB). "Modeled on Enlightenment philosophy, Notes was regarded at the time as a celebration of America's attributes as much as Virginia's and as a defense of republicanism the Virginia of his imagination was indisputably his idealized America" (Burstein and Isenberg, 120-21).

Minor toning to text, light occasional foxing, small marginal repairs to folding map. Short closed tear in L4, touching a few words. Very good. In a brown half morocco box. A very nice copy of Jefferson's essential work on his home state of Virginia, styled on the titlepage "Eighth American edition." This is the only book-length work by Jefferson to be published in his lifetime, and has been called "one of America's first permanent literary and intellectual landmarks" (Peden). It was largely written in 1781 and first published in Paris, in French, in 1785. Written in the form of answers to questions about Virginia, the book provides a description of the geography, with an abundance of supporting material and unusual information. The map by Samuel Lewis which accompanies this edition is the same map as that issued with the Philadelphia 1794 edition, with the same date of 1794. The frontispiece portrait was engraved by Enoch G. Gridley, and is pictured and described in Cunningham's The Image of Thomas Jefferson in the Public Eye. Cunningham states: "Not all copies [of this edition] contain a signed state of the engraving, but the unsigned prints are otherwise identical to those that included 'Gridley sc.' inscribed in very small lettering immediately under the portrait." The portrait in the present copy is not "signed." This edition includes appendices containing Charles Thompson's notes on Jefferson's original text, his "Draught of a Fundamental Constitution for the Commonwealth of Virginia," "An Act for Establishing Religious Freedom," and the story of the "Murder of Logan's Family." An excellent copy of Jefferson's enduring work, in an edition also notable for the portrait and the map. HOWES J78.
