In den WarenkorbHalf Leather. Zustand: Good. Published in Shrewsbury in 1800, this is the stated fifth edition of this very scarce publication in early edition form. During the late 1700s, England operated under the "Old Poor Laws". Local parishes were entirely responsible for managing their neighbourhood's poor, sick, and destitute. The Shrews…bury House of Industry opened officially in 1784 and quickly gained national fame. It was widely considered a "model workhouse" because it attempted to systematically organize relief, put inmates to productive work, and lower tax burdens on local ratepayers. Isaac Wood wrote this handbook as a blueprint or "how-to guide" for other cities looking to replicate Shrewsbury's methods. This specific 1800 edition is highly valued by social historians because it includes a massive new introduction containing Wood's sharp criticisms of England's "defective system of the Poor's Laws". It serves as an important, first hand look at the intense societal debates that eventually led to the complete overhaul of the British welfare system via the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. This copy originally belonged to John Wickstead (1774-1837) who was a local manufacturer and a known figure in Shrewsbury's industrial and civic circles. Records show that he worked as a starch manufacturer and later served as a manager at the Shrewsbury gasworks The book is bound in a recent half leather binding titled and decorated in gilt. Internally this is a sammelband as bound into the rear of this copy are two further pieces, the first being "The Natural History of Shropshire" section taken from Benjamin Martin's The Natural History of England; or, A Description of each Particular County" published in 1763 And the second a very scarce Nantwich published pamphlet, "A Form of Prayer" published by H. Snelson in 1809 which runs to 8 pages. CONDITION The leather binding is in very good condition. internally some darkening and marking to opening title page, light marking and creasing with some edge wear to last two pages of the Shrewsbury publication, Darkening and marking to title page and closing page of the Nantwich pamphlet with some creasing and edge wear else in good general condition.
