A MiniDisc (MD) is a magneto-optical disc-based data storage device initially intended for storage of up to 80 minutes of digitized audio. Today, in the form of Hi-MD, it has developed into a general-purpose storage medium in addition to greatly expanding its audio roots. MiniDisc was announced by Sony in September 1992 and released that November for sale in Japan and December for the USA and Europe. The music format was originally based exclusively on ATRAC audio data compression, but the option of linear PCM recording was ultimately introduced to attain CD- quality recordings. MiniDiscs were popular in Japan and Asia as a digital upgrade from cassette tapes, butwere not as popular elsewhere.…

Optical storageis a term from engineering referring to the storage of data on anoptically readable medium. Data is recorded by making marks in a patternthat can be read back with the aid of light, usually a beam of laserlight precisely focused on a spinning disc. An older example, that doesnot require the use of computers, is microform. There are other means ofoptically storing data and new methods are in development. Opticalstorage differs from other data storage techniques that make use ofother technologies such as magnetism or semiconductors.…

In computing, ablock is a sequence of bytes or bits, having a nominal length. Data thusstructured are said to be blocked. The process of putting data intoblocks is called blocking. Blocking is used to facilitate the handlingof the data-stream by the computer program receiving the data. Blockeddata are normally read a whole block at a time. Blocking is almostuniversally employed when storing data to 9-track magnetic tape, torotating media such as floppy disks, hard disks, optical discs and toNAND flash memory. Most file systems are based on a block device, whichis a level of abstraction for the hardware responsible for storing andretrieving specified blocks of data, though the block size in filesystems may be a multiple of the physical block size. In classical filesystems, a single block may only contain a part of a single file. Thisleads to space inefficiency due to internal fragmentation, since filelengths are often not multiples of block size, and thus the last blockof files will remain partially empty. This will create slack spacewhich averages half a block per file.…

An optical jukebox is a robotic data storage device that can automatically load and unload optical discs, such as Compact Disc, DVD, Ultra Density Optical or Blu-ray disc and can provide terabytes and petabytes of tertiary storage. The devices are often called optical disk libraries, robotic drives, or autochangers. Jukebox devices may have up to 2,000 slots for disks, and usually have a picking device that traverses the slots and drives. The arrangement of the slots and picking devices affects performance, depending on the space between a disk and the picking device. Seek times and transfer rates vary depending upon the optical technology. Jukeboxes are used in high-capacity archive storage environments such as imaging, medical, and video. Hierarchical storage management is a strategy that moves little-used or unused files from fast magnetic storage to optical jukebox devices in a process called migration.…
