Zustand: Near Fine. First Edition. First Edition. First Edition. An original signed drawing/litho by Marcel Vertès (18951961), who was a Hungarian-born French painter, illustrator, and costume designer. Executed on tan paper, the sketch depicts a model with black birds. Signed in full in pencil at the lower right. At the lower left appear the letters "E.S." (or possibly "E.E."), which may denote épreuve d'artiste (artist's proof), suggesting this was preparatory work toward a final lithograph. Sheet size: 11 x 14 ¾ in. Light toning consistent with age, otherwise near fine. This drawing is often identified as "PARALLÈLEMENT 19" in reference to the nineteenth plate in Vertès's 1954 illustrations for Paul Verlaine's PARALLÈLEMENT. While the title does not appear on the sheet itself, the subject and composition clearly relate to the series, which captured the provocative spirit of Verlaine's poetry through Vertès's modern, witty line. Marcel Vertès achieved international acclaim for his stylish, often playful depictions of Parisian life, women, and fashion. In 1952 he won two Academy Awards for John Huston's Moulin Rouge for Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction. A beautiful sketch mastered by the hand of the modern and talented Artist Marcel Vertès that are rarely signed and seen.
