Phädon oder über die Unsterblichkeit der Seele (Phaedo or On the Immortality of Souls; 1767) is modeled on Plato's dialogue of the same name. Mendelssohn's work possesses some of the charm of its Greek exemplar and it impressed the German world with its beauty and lucidity of style. Phaedon was an immediate success, and besides being one of the most widely read German language book of its time, it was quickly translated into several other European languages, including English. The author was hailed as the "German Plato", or the "German Socrates." Royalty and aristocrats showered attentions on Mendelsohn, and it was said that "no stranger who came to Berlin failed to pay his personal respects to the German Socrates. Moses Mendelssohn (6 September 1729 - 4 January 1786) was a German-Jewish philosopher, whose ideas the Haskalah, the 'Jewish Enlightenment' of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, is indebted. He was born to a poor Jewish family in Dessau, in the principality of Anhalt, and was originally destined for a rabbinical career. He educated himself in German thought and literature and based on his writings on philosophy and religion was viewed as a leading cultural figure of his time by both Christians and Jews in German-speaking Europe and beyond. He also established himself as an important figure in the Berlin textile industry, which formed the foundation of his family's wealth. His descendants include the composers Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn; Felix's son, chemist Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy; Fanny's grandsons, Paul and Kurt Hensel; and the founders of the Mendelssohn & Co. banking house. Mendelssohn, (1729 - 1786), Kind eines armen jüdischen Gemeindeschreibers, gelang unter schwierigen materiellen Bedingungen, zu einem der führenden Vertreter der deutschen Spätaufklärung, einer der überragenden Gestalten des zeitgenössischen Judentums und einem höchst erfolgreichen Kaufmann aufzusteigen. Abbt had introduced him to Plato's work, the Phaedo, and he decided to bring this work into the contemporary world. The book is dedicated to Abbt. It is a series of three dialogues in which Socrates argues for the immortality of the soul, in preparation for his own death. He published about a third of the original text unaltered and updated the other two thirds, as well as simplifying some passages for lay readers.
