Signed gift dedication from William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) to the right honourable Earl of Derby, dated Jan 1875. We have matched his signature with known examples to confirm the signature is correct. He later styled himself simply "Kelvin". This is an 1871 facsimile reproduction of the 1726 third corrected edition. "Reprinted for Sir William Thomson., LL.D., and Hugh Blackburn, M.A." It is thus a presentation copy of a work in which he had a personal hand. Text in Latin. Facsimile title of the third edition printed in red and black, diagrams in the text. In a prefatory notice, the editors explain that, "Finding all the Editions of the Principia are now out of print, we have been induced to reprint Newton's last Edition [i.e. the third] without note or comment, only introducing the 'Corrigenda' of the old copy and correcting typographical errors". Neat private library bookplate to inside cover. the crest of Edward Stanley - 17th Earl of Derby, thus confirming the provenance. Binding sound and tight, plain brown cloth boards, supple hinges, some wear and minor loss at spine ends, white paper spine title label is rubbed with dusky marks, remians more or less readable. Text inside beautifully clean nd tight with many line illus diagrams and tables in text. First three leaves have 1cm torn flaps at the hinge base. The hand cutting of the fore-edges has been carried out reasonably neatly throughout. xxxvi + 538 numbered pages.
