Hans Kopfermann was a member of Germany's The German nuclear weapons program…informally known as the Uranium Club which was a German scientific effort to develop atomic weapons during World War II. It went through several phases of work from 1939-1942, but ultimately failed. In 1940, the publication of his book, Kernmomente, influenced a generation of nuclear physicists. In 1941, against his will, Kopfermann was named dean of Kiel University by the rector, which pressured Kopfermann into joining the National Socialist Workers Party. He remained at Kiel until 1942. Kopfermann was a principal participant in an event organized by Wolfgang Finkelnburg. The event, known as the ?Munich Synod?, signaled the decline of the influence of the German physics movement. The United States organization, designated FIAT (Field Investigation Agency-Technical), combed mountains of papers found in factories and hideaways, to ferret out the scientific secrets, the mechanical devices, and the special techniques developed by the Germans in the decades following World War I and to make public many of the technical and scientific advances made by the German and Axis government during World War II. FIAT acquired the responsibility for the Publication Board program that exploited Germany's scientific and industrial secrets for the benefit of the world. This is volume 12 of the publication series.
