This book offers an overview of the state-of-art of Italian applications of complexity science and new ICT (information and communication technologies) in urban and territorial planning domain, on the basis of a large number… of contributions very well representative of the ensemble of schools and scholars. Seven key issues are considered, covering both the intrinsic complexity of geographical systems and the complex reasoning of the planners. As regard to the latter, the difficult tasks of knowledge building and management, of deriving actions from knowledge, and finally of performing actions, are taken in account. In this context, a special attention is paid to technologies for knowledge acquisition or supporting actions execution as well as to the holistic complexity of a plan in its whole. Accordingly more than thirty Italian original papers add new findings about complex spatial networks, knowledge organization and management systems, decision and participation support systems, complexity and selforganization in public policies, design and scenarios building. A care is common to all the contributions: pointing out new ICT role and evaluating their effectiveness in planning. Questo libro offre una panoramica dello stato dell'arte delle applicazioni italiane di scienza della complessità e delle nuove ICT (tecnologie dell'informazione e della comunicazione) nelle aree urbane e del dominio di pianificazione territoriale, sulla base di un gran numero di contributi molto ben rappresentativo del complesso di scuole e studiosi. Sette punti chiave sono considerati, che coprono sia la complessità intrinseca dei sistemi geografici che il complesso ragionamento dei pianificatori. Per quanto riguarda questi ultimi sono prese in considerazione sia il difficile compito di costruire la conoscenza e la gestione delle azioni derivanti da essa, che l'eseguire azioni. In questo contesto, una particolare attenzione viene prestata alle tecnologie per l'acquisizione di conoscenze o azioni di sostegno di esecuzione nonché alla complessità olistica di un piano nel suo complesso. Di conseguenza sono più di trenta gli articoli italiani originali che aggiungono nuove scoperte su complesse reti territoriali, organizzazione della conoscenza e dei sistemi di gestione, sistemi di supporto decisionale e di partecipazione, la complessità e selforganization nelle politiche pubbliche, della progettazione e costruzione di scenari. Una cura che è comune a tutti i contributi e che rileva il nuovo ruolo delle TIC per valutare la loro efficacia nella pianificazione.Giovanni Rabino is professor of Urban Planning at the Faculty of Architecture and Building Engineering of Polytechnic of Milan. He is an acknowledged expert in urban studies, especially applying system theories and methods. His main contributions concern operational urban models, evolutionary theory applied to geographical structures and, recently, web technologies supporting multi-agents planning. Matteo Caglioni is PhD. at SMECTE (Sciences and Methods for European City and Territory) of University of Pisa (thesis on random fractality of spatial structures). After his participation to the European COST action "Urban ontologies", he is presently carrying out researches on "semantic enhancement" of geographical information systems for a better support to planning.
