A very scarce work from the Religious Tract society chap-book series. This work is number '7' as indicated by the '7' to the title page. 'The Pleasing Instructor' is a work in moral guidance, intended to offer short and quick moral lessons to those who read it. Illustrated throughout, including a plate to the rear wrap. Written by Ann Fisher, a grammarian who publisher 'A New Grammar' in 1745, which went through many editions and was very popular. She also wrote 'New English Tutor' and 'Spelling Dictionary'. Undated, dated using WorldCat entries, of which there are three entries. Collated according to worldcat entries, this copy also has fifteen pages and an illustrated woodcut to the rear. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, worn. Closed tear to the front wrap. Light marking to the wraps causing just a little discolouration. Rear wrap is lifting to the head. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean. Good Only. book.

Revised & expanded edition of this popular work first compiled by Anne Fisher (1719-1778) who not only ran "The Printing Press" with her husband Thomas Slack, but also operated Fisher's School for girls in St. Nicholas churchyard, Newcastle, presumably educating all nine of their daughters as well. This pioneering educator, and successful author is perhaps best remembered as the first female Grammarian, and her New Grammar which was first published in 1745 would eventually see 40 different editions. Her educational textbooks, including this volume as well as the New English Tutor, New English Exercise Book, and An Accurate New Spelling Dictionary were a significant contribution to education for young women in the 18th- and 19th-Centuries. Anne Fisher (1719-1778), the wife of Newcastle printer Thomas Slack and the mother of nine daughters, wrote a number of books on education. She Òwas no mere compiler; she wrote as an experienced educator. Her comments on the teaching of English grammar in the preface of her New Grammar continue to be pertinent and there is a modern ring, too, to her remark, in the introduction to her Pleasing Instructor, that: ÔAn austere or learned pedant has sometimes whipped Latin, Greek, &c. into a lad, whose very disgust to it increased, perhaps, with the Acquisition thereof; but it is a manifest absurdity to maintain or imagine that anyone can be awed into a Love of learningÕ (quoted in Oxford DNB). Fisher continues to lament the state of womenÕs education, believing that Òa young lady should be taught to think, reflect, and form a taste of life in.Ó Twelvemo, in sixes.
