Prima edizione.

First edition. 4to., endpaper, blank, title/tirage leaf, frontispiece portrait, title with fleuron, dedication leaf, section title, [1p.], p-12, [6pp.], [7pp.], pp-20-196, fleuron, parchment wrapper with Manet's crow and fleuron bound in, blank, blank, endpaper, very largely French with some English in the notes. A flyer for Mallarmé's lecture on ?French Poetry' at Pembroke College loosely inserted. Wide margins, untrimmed in later half, black, grained morocco and buckram covered boards, titles in gilt within five raised bands. One of 850 copies with 1-50 on Japon Impérial. This copy being number 815 from 800 on Hollande numbered 51 to 850 and one of 75 copies hors commerce. A twice signed and inscribed presentation copy from the translator. Brussels, chez l'éditeur Edmond Denman, 1888. £8,750.00 A nice copy, endemic and very light foxing of untrimmed leaf edges, the spine of Manet's wrapper lacking. Imbert 15 who claims this as one of 50 H.C. on Hollande with ?Tire pour M. S. Mallarmé' on the tirage leaf. Imbert notes that there were an unknown number of copies with 'Éxemaplaire spécial pour.' on Outhenin Chalandre fils & Co., Paris. All association copies are unique but this is more unique than the rest with two presentation inscriptions and in turn from the library of an English connoisseur collector of fin de siêcle, Symbolist and Decadent French literature. A rare book, most desirable as an association copy and with Manet's wrapper, the Bnf has Etienne Moreau -Nélaton's copy but no doubt it would have welcomed dandy de Banville's with equally open arms. A wonderful doubly blessed, contemporary association copy from the translator to the great writer/poet Théodore de Banville and the journalist Leonard Whibley. Both were great friends of Mallarmé's but Banville is rather better remembered as a significant figure in French literature. The full inscriptions in sepia ink on the recto/verso of the title/tirage respectively read: 'A mon bien aimé Maître Theodore de Banville jadis, toujours Stéphane Mallarmé' And: 'A Leonard Whibley un hôte de the Sussex Belle et de Pembroke College qui garde un souvenir exquis Stéphane Mallarmé' Whibley was elected to a fellowship at Pembroke in 1889, he had become acquainted with the whole French literary scene whilst working for the Pall Mall Gazette in Paris and counted Banville, Mallarmé and Valery amongst his close friends. Mallarmé had visited on March 2, 1894 to deliver his lecture on French Poetry commemorated in the flyer included with this book. The circumstances by which Banville passed the book to Whistler's brother in law to be signed again or vice versa remain an intriguing mystery. He was though deceased by 1891, three years or so before this was inscribed to Whibley - who perhaps inherited it, or, bought it at the Drouot. Manet was delighted with Mallarmé's translation of Poe (the crow on the wrapper here was previously included in Mallrme's earlier 1875 translation ?Le Corbeau') saying of it in a letter that went through the Aristophil collection recently: 'Let me tell you the pleasure, the delight I felt when reading your book. I completely ignored POE's poetry, it's admirable, it's poetry itself, the dream and how we feel that you have translated the soul! I am only a completely illiterate ignorant but am no less moved. I only knew about Poe his proses that I had read and admired very young before hearing about it but as your poems complete and tell the man that it was.' Copy 815 was also inscribed identically to Theodore de Banville (sold from the great Koch auction at Sothebys in 1990) presenting something of an intriguing puzzle as to how it ended up with Whibley and was inscribed by Mallarmé again. The poems are dark and full of altered states of consciousness and 'La dormeuse opiacée' etc., at odds rather with memories of a jolly, taking the air at either a country inn (or perhaps a Brighton hostelry), or a train carriage with good vittles enjoyed by Whibley and Mallarmé.
