Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (Number Line to 1). Nearly flawless book and dust jacket being sold at a discount. Do some comparison shopping. As you can see from the photographs, the covers of this book are spotless. The level of wear is close to nil, there's a very light crease at the top right-hand corner of the front cover and a little bit of bending at the top edge of the spine (see photos). This book is square and tight and very solidly bound. The pages are extremely clean. Leafing through, I didn't see any instances of soiling. The pages are also in excellent condition, without creasing or dogeared corners. They are very bright. There aren't any markings or attachments. There isn't any writing/underlining, etc. anywhere in the text. However, the previous owner, James F. Bingham, wrote his name and address (Stamford Ct.) on the front free end paper. Between two pages inside the book I found a 4 by 6 museum reproduction art print on the back of which was written some pre-invitation information about an upcoming wedding of an Auden Grogins. The note is 'To: Judge Bingham'. The late Judge James F Bingham previous owner of this book, was a Republican state representative for northern Stamford from 1969 to 1974 and served as a Superior Court judge from 1983 to 2008. Googling Auden Grogins I found this from 2015: 'Three-term state Rep. Auden Grogins, of Bridgeport, will leave the General Assembly and accept a nomination from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to become a Superior Court judge'. She is a Democrat. It reminds you that there was once a time when Republicans and Democrats were actually civil to another. I'll enclose the art print with the book. The dust jacket looks fantastic. It is NOT clipped. There isn't any soiling (despite the back being white). There aren't any tears. In fact, the only 'wear' I see is a tiny and light crease at the top right-hand corner of the front. You can confirm all this by looking at the first three photographs. The dust jacket will be fitted with a protective cover. From the dust jacket flap 'This book represents a fundamental and extremely important contribution to Athenian social and political history. Virginia Hunter asks new questions and brings to bear a body of evidence that most previous accounts largely ignore. Accordingly she greatly advances our knowledge on a whole series of issues, such as the role and treatment of slaves, social practices related to litigation and prosecution, and maintenance of public order' David Cohen, University Of California Berkeley. Also 'From household gossip to public beatings, this social history explores the many channels through which Athenians maintained public order. She describes Athenian 'policing' as a form of social control that took place across a range of private and public levels. Not only does policing appear to have been a collective enterprise, but it's methods were embedded in a variety of social institutions, resulting in the blurring of the line between state and society'.

From household gossip to public beatings, this social history explores the many channels through which Athenians maintained public order. Virginia Hunter draws mostly on Attic court proceedings, which allowed for a wide range of evidence, including common rumors about a defendant's character and testimony, obtained under torture, of slaves against their masters. She describes Athenian "policing" as a form of social control that took place across a range of private and public levels. Not only does policing appear to have been a collective enterprise, but its methods were embedded in a variety of social institutions, resulting in the blurring of the line between state and society. Hunter's inquiry into topics such as household authority, disputes among kin, the presence of slaves in the house, gossip in the home and neighborhood, and forms of public punishment reveals a continuum extending from self-regulation among kin to punitive actions enforced by the state. Recognizing the bias of legal documents toward the wealthy, Hunter concentrates on exposing the voices of the less powerful and less privileged members of society, including women and slaves. In so doing she is among the first to address systematically such important issues as the authority of women, self-help, and corporal punishment. .
