Pearce received a B.S. in Product Design from IIT's Institute of Design, in 1958, after which he worked as a staff designer in the office of Charles Eames. He has taught at California State University at Northridge, was Visiting Critic in the Department of Architecture at the University of Southern California, and was Associate Dean of the School of Design at the California Institute of the Arts. Pearce has written Structure in Nature Is a Strategy for Design (MIT Press, 1978), which is based on his research into fundamental structure and morphology. He has lectured extensively in the United States and England, and his work has appeared in numerous international publications.
