Hall 'was an American educator. He was born in Croydon, New Hampshire, the son of a clergyman. When he was only three years old, his family moved to Guildha…ll, Vermont. Samuel was home schooled and never attended a a college. In 1814 be was employed as a teacher in Rumford, Maine. He studied to become a minister in Meriden, New Hampshire and gained his license in 1823. He became the principal at an academy in Fitchburg, Massachusetts in 1822. In 1823 he started the first school in the United States for the instruction of teachers, and he ran the institution until 1830. He helped found the American Institute of Instruction in 1829, the oldest educational association in the U.S. A year later he joined the Phillips Andover academy, serving as principal of their English department. From 1837 40 he ran a teacher's seminary in Plymouth, New Hampshire. At an academy in Craftsbury, Vermont, he then established a teacher's department, which he ran until 1846. He died in Brownington, Vermont and is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery. . . . The library at Lyndon State College is named after him. . . . The Samuel Read Hall Residence Hall at Plymouth State University is named after him' (Wikipedia).

Assorted old-hand markings. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce piece by American educator Samuel Read Hall (1795-1877). Owned by abolitionist Eden B. Foster (1813-1822), the second pastor of the St. John's Congregational Church of Lowell, Massachusetts. Known as the "anti-slavery church", it was associated with the funding of fugitive slaves, and the reputation was intensified following the appointment of Foster. COLU1833AFGP.
