Very rare vairent with much bigger boards (1cm higher) than the normal version more commonly seen. Page edges are un-evenly cut, different paper quality to the normal edition and Gilt to top edge. I belive the publisher may have used the limited edition pages and bound up this book as a trial or to simply use them up. White endpapers instead of the normal black as in the delux version. Dated 1894 with name. No mention of this binding in the bibliography. The famous "Peacock edition" of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". Often regarded as the most beautifully produced of Jane Austen's classic works . Over 101 illustrations by the formost illustrator of the time Hugh Thomson. Book is very good++ and very bright. About this Item: George Allen, Ruskin House, London, 1894. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Hugh Thomson (illustrator). The iconic first Hugh Thomson illustrated edition of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. This copy bound wonderfully, with the important Peacock cloth binding bound-in at the rear. Bookplates whithin (loose, not glued down) of Mrs. Thomas Elliott Donnelley; Thomas E. Donnelley was the early 20th century President of R.R. Donnelley and Sons, a well-known publisher. Physical Attributes - Measures 18 x 12 x 4 cm. Full calf fine-binding. Five raised spine ribs; all spine compartments ruled in gilt, title and author in gilt in one spine compartment, and "London 1894" at bottom of spine. Boards ruled in double gilt, with a dentelle inner border. All edges ruled in gilt. Double stack endbands, alternating yellow and red. Turn-ins also ruled in gilt. Top-edge gilt. Publisher's cloth binding bound-in at the rear of the volume on blank endpapers. Pages - (2), xxviii, 476, colophon, leaf with cloth spine, leaf with front board cloth, (2). Condition - See pictures. Beautiful book. Leather is soft and subtle. I'll nitpick. Spine has slight discoloration and some tiny cracks in the compartments, with a rub on the top spine rib. Bottom edges have a little wear. Front joint has a little color loss along the joint. Front board has a 2 cm scrape at top edge, and a 1 cm scrape near bottom of fore-edge, both surface level only. Slight toning to un-gilded fore-edge and bottom-edge. Leather turn-ins have ghosted onto the facing endpapers (perhaps a leather conditioner that was used caused this). Miraculously, no bookseller notes on the blank unpaginated pages. The illustration index has several pencil "x" marks; I erased them but still faintly visible. I checked the illustrations with an "x", and they are present, so the writer must have been noting their favorites. Occasional very small dot (singular) on pages. Pencil binder note "26" on back of colophon (rear of text). Pages 107-115 have small yellow dot at top of fore-edge margin (no text touched). 700 grams. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 228

About this Item: George Allen, London, 1894. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Hugh Thomson (illustrator). First edition of the famed 'Peacock Edition' of Austen's novel. Features numerous b/w illustrations, decorated initials and devices by Hugh Thomson, who also designed the elaborate and iconic Peacock on Sundial cover done in gilt on green cloth. The scheme for this edition follows that of Macmillan's 'Cranford series', of which Thomson designed the inaugural volume in 1891. The appearance of these deluxe volumes, frequently at christmas, became minor publishing events and none was to prove as popular and enduring as the Peacock edition. Complete with a preface by George Saintsbury. All edges gilt. Tissue guarded frontispiece. Small 8vo. (185x140mm) [xxvii] 476pp. Repairs/discreet rebacking to top and tail of spine allowing binding to have strengthened, thus volume is tight and square. Instance of light spotting to title page/tissue guard. Mild offsetting/toning due to tissue guard. Very occasional light marking within but overall a particularly clean and prim example. Good/very good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 003609

A fair to good copy of the 1st publication of the 'Peacock Edition' of Pride and Prejudice with illustrations by Hugh Thomson. In the original green decorative cloth binding with spectacular gilt peacock design to front board and gilt designs to spine. Aeg. With numerous black and white illustrations by Thomson. The binding is bright and clean. The front board has wear to the corners with slight cloth loss and a small indentation at the side edge also with slight cloth loss. The spine is cocked to the front and is slightly dulled with some pulling and slight fraying at the bottom. The back board has some corner wear and slightly faded areas. The original black endpapers are present with early splitting at the front joint and more obvious splitting at the rear joint where there has been repair. The book is sound but shaken - with webbing visible at p 32/3 and 352. Contents are complete and in good clean condition. There is a light stain to the side edge of the fep which persists to the dedication page, and occasional spotting primarily to margins. There is some marking at pp 18/19. There is what looks like an old repair to the corners of pp 175/6 and 177/8 where a section was probably torn and reattached - there is slight loss of text underneath the adhesive that has been used. There are a couple of very small edge tears at the bottom margin. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 032662
