First editions of all three volumes of Jane Austen's second novel and most popular. Octavo, three volumes, bound in contemporary three quarter calf over marbled boards with gilt titles to the spine. In very good condition. Armorial bookplates to each pastedown. Period gift inscription from the year of publication to the title page of Vol. I.: "Mary Anne King given her by her mother April 1813." An exceptional example of this landmark work in English literature, rare and desirable bound in contemporary calf. Pride and Prejudice was written between October 1796 and August 1797 when Jane Austen was not yet twenty-one. After an early rejection by the publisher Cadell, who had not even read it, Austen's novel was finally bought by Egerton in 1812 for £110. It was published in late January 1813 in a small edition of approximately 1500 copies and sold for 18 shillings in boards. Volume I of the first edition was printed by Roworth and Volumes II and III by Sidney, and their imprints appear both on the versos of the half titles and at the end of the text of each volume In a letter to her sister Cassandra on 29 January 1813, Austen writes of receiving her copy of the newly publishing novel (her "own darling child"), and while acknowledging its few errors, she expresses her feelings toward its heroine as such: "I must confess that I think her as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print, & how I shall be able to tolerate those who do not like her at least, I do not know." Gilson A3; Grolier English 69; Keynes 3; Sadleir 62b. With a contemporary ink gift inscription to volume one, "Mary Anne King given her by her mother. April 1813" to title, Campbell family bookplate to pastedowns. Lacking the half-titles. With volume one lacking text f. F9 (pp. 113-114).

First editions of all three volumes of Jane Austenâs masterpiece, her bestselling book during her lifetime which remains a landmark of English literature. 12mo, three volumes bound in full mottled calf with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine, double gilt ruling and botanical gilt scrolling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins, all edges speckled black. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine. A very attractive example of this significant work in English literature. Originally titled First Impressions, Pride and Prejudice was written between October 1796 and August 1797 when Jane Austen was not yet twenty-one, the same age, in fact, as her fictional heroine Elizabeth Bennet. After an early rejection by the publisher Cadell who had not even read it, Austen's novel was finally bought by Egerton in 1812 for £110. It was published in late January 1813 in a small edition of approximately 1500 copies and sold for 18 shillings in boards. âThe size of the edition is not known⦠perhaps 1500 copies⦠The first edition was sold off very rapidly and a second one was printed in the same yearâ (Keynes, 8). A novel of manners, the story follows the character development of young Elizabeth Bennet, an independent young lady who learns about the repercussions of hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness. âElizabethâs own energy and defiance of character respond to Rousseauâs and the popular notion of the pliant, submissive female. None of her novels delighted Jane Austen more than Pride and Prejudice⦠She had given a rare example of fiction as a highly intelligent form⦠This remains her most popular and widely translated novelâ (Honan, 313-20). Pride and Prejudice has consistently appeared near the top of lists of "most-loved books" among literary scholars and the reading public. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature, with over 20 million copies sold, and has inspired many derivatives in modern literature. For more than a century, dramatic adaptations, reprints, unofficial sequels, films, and televised versions of Pride and Prejudice have portrayed the memorable characters and themes of the novel, reaching mass audiences. The most popular film adaptations include the 1995 BBC television adaptation starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet and the 2005 film directed by Joe Wright and starring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy. In very good condition. Title page of Vol. I supplied in facsimile and pages [1]-4 re-inserted and tipped in.

Zustand: Near fine. First printing. First US edition in a stunning fine art binding by the acclaimed Argentinian design bookbinder Sol Rébora. Austen's most beloved novel is simultaneously a unique production of profound artistic confidence and an entertaining popular love story: it builds on a long-established tradition of English courtship novels in conversation with many women authors before her like Frances Burney (from whose book CECILIA Austen may have borrowed the very phrase "pride and prejudice"). Austen admitted in a letter that she thought her book's heroine, Elizabeth Bennett, "as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print" (29 January 1813) and generations of readers have agreed with her. First published in 1813 in three volumes, this is the first edition to appear in the United States, published in two volumes by Carey & Lea in an edition of only 750 copies. Sol Rébora is an internationally recognized design bookbinder based in Buenos Aires. Her works embody a minimalistic elegance that is nevertheless subtly complex, as in the carefully structured multiple layers used here. They are not only visually stunning, but supremely tactile. From Rèbora's artist statement: "The cloth texture is achieved using silk with a patterned design that evokes the aesthetic of the time period in which the original edition was produced, creating a visual connection with antique paper. This design also appeals to the collective memory of how custom bindings from the early 19th century might have appeared, complete with deep-relief hot-stamping impressions." A magnificent, unique copy of an Austen first. Two 12mo volumes, 6.75'' x 4.25'' each. Modern full peach design binding by Sol Rébora in Can Can structure with one layer of cotton cloth and two layers of Japanese paper, each element hand-painted with acrylics and textured with a patterned design impressed with deep-relief hot-stamping from silk; spines and boards stamped in dark grey. Cotton and abaca handmade paper peach endpapers. Publisher's catalogue bound at front of Vol. I. 199, [1]; 209, [1] pages. Vol. I with early pencil inscription of the Portsmouth Athenaeum to fly leaf; early newspaper clipping on "Jane Austen's Genius" archivally tipped onto rear fly leaf. Some browning, light staining to text block, a few early marginal pencil notes. Bright.

First edition of the final novel published during Austen's lifetime, one of only 2000 copies printed. Small octavo, three volumes finely bound in three quarter leather over marbled boards by Birdsall & Son with morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, top edge gilt, front pastedowns stamp-signed by Birdsall & Son, Northampton. Without half-titles. In very good condition with toning throughout, armorial bookplate to each pastedown. An exceptional example of one of the most highly coveted titles in English literature. After many publishing delays, Austen decided to self-finance the publication of Emma, paying printer John Murray a 10% commission and retaining the remaining profits. "Emma was the fourth and last novel which Jane Austen published in her lifetime. When it was written the author was at the height of her powers, and she wrote the book rapidly and surely, encouraged by the success of her previous novels to express herself with confidence in the way peculiarly her own" (Rosenbach 29:24). "Jane Austen's fourth novel has a profundity similar to that of Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility, only more elusive since Emma's character is far more subtle than Elizabeth or Marianne's⦠Austen's self-knowledge, her love of detail⦠[helped her] to create a proud, self-willed, self-guided, vexing and outrageous Emma and her greatest novel" (Honan, Jane Austen, 356-364). The novel has been adapted into several films, televised programs, and plays including the 1996 period film of the same name starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Alan Cumming, Toni Collette, Ewan McGregor, and Jeremy Northam.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. London: Richard Bentley, 1833. COLLECTED EDITION. Five volumes, octavo (160 x 100 mm) An attractive set, no half titles, engraved frontispiece in each volume. Bound in publishers contemporary polished tan calf, covers gilt ruled; rebacked, preserving most of the original double labels, with marbled end papers, with the spines fully gilt S&S and P&P have an ex-libris bookplate, P&P has some news cuttings attached to the final blank. Emma has a stain on the frontis and title page possibly caused by the leaving an insert. Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey also have an ex-libris. Contents are clean, no paper tear, tears or loss. The calf bindings have some marks, the end papers are whole. The Bentley editions of Austen's novels were issued both separately, and afterwards collectively with a substituted title page reading "The Novels by Miss Jane Austen. Complete in Five volumes". Gilson cites contemporary notes in the Athenaeum implying publication of the separate issue of Mansfield Park in April 1833 and the collective issue from October 1833. Copies from the collective issue are much less commonly encountered than those of the separate issues, Gilson calling them "very rare in any state". Issued by Bentley beginning in 1833, this one with the frontis and all five printed title-pages dated 1833, but with the part-title at p. [213] of the last volume, for Persuasion, dated 1851. Sadleir writes it may be of interest to note that Bentley advertised this Collected Edition in the Athenaeum of October 1833, as . as neatly bound for the library so as to range with the Scott s novels, Miss Edgeworth s novels, Byron s work , etc price 30s. - see Sadleir X1X Century p105. I have a set of Edgeworth in the same calf and the spines have the same gilt design, there is also an identical set with spine decorations, and calf boards, of Walter Scott s for sale elsewhere. The present set is therefore one of the Austen rare publishers neatly bound library sets. A very similar set owned by Charlton Heston sold at Bonhams in March 2016 and was also sold without the printed half titles and engraved titles. WorldCat states three copies.

An elegantly bound set of the first fully illustrated editions of Austen's collected novels. The editions, illustrated by Hugh Thomson, were sensationally popular around the turn of the century. Complete sets in fine, uniform leather bindings are uncommon. Thomson (1860-1920) was celebrated in particular for his illustrated editions of English literary classics. He illustrated Pride and Prejudice for George Allen's "peacock" edition (1894) and subsequently turned his pen to Austen's remaining works for Macmillan's Illustrated Standard Novels series (1895-7). His "light touch and feeling for period manners provide a charming and accessible gloss to the author's work" (ODNB). 5 vols, octavo (Northanger Abbey: 193 x 137 mm; other vols: 185 x 128 mm). Frontispieces and illustrations to the text including scenes, historiated initials, and head- and tailpieces, all by Hugh Thomson. Near-contemporary light brown polished calf by Morrell, spines richly gilt, red and green morocco labels, triple gilt fillet border to covers with flower tools to corners, edges and turn-ins gilt, pale blue coated endpapers, all edges gilt (save for Northanger Abbey, top edge gilt, others untrimmed), yellow silk bookmarkers, original cloth covers bound in at rear of each vol. Bookplates and labels of Sir Harry Newton, 2nd Baronet (1875-1951), Conservative politician and MP for Harwich. Minimally rubbed, spines sunned, light sprays of foxing to outer leaves of a couple of vols. A handsome, choice set.

Sporadic foxing as usual with this title. Recent calf with gilt spines. Final blanks in volume 4 not present, otherwise complete and correct, all pages intact. The first edition of two of Austen s most loved works, published just after her death. Persuasion features the famous incident at the Lyme Regis Cobb, when Louise Musgrove jumps off and Captain Wentworth fails to catch her in his arms. Northanger Abbey is Austen s first work, but only published later, and shows a strong influence of Gothic novels. Gilson A9; Keynes 9; Sadleir 62e. Further photos provided gladly upon request.

The Peacock edition of Jane Austen's most popular novel. Octavo, original publisher's pictorial cloth elaborately decorated in gilt with the iconic, highly detailed peacock design, illustrated by Hugh Thomson. With a preface by George Saintsbury. In near fine condition with light rubbing. A beautiful example of this landmark work in English literature. Volume I of the first edition was printed by Roworth and Volumes II and III by Sidney, and their imprints appear both on the versos of the half titles and at the end of the text of each volume In a letter to her sister Cassandra on 29 January 1813, Austen writes of receiving her copy of the newly publishing novel (her "own darling child"), and while acknowledging its few errors, she expresses her feelings toward its heroine as such: "I must confess that I think her as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print, & how I shall be able to tolerate those who do not like her at least, I do not know." Early separate issue from Bentley's Standard Novels series of the final novel published during Austen's lifetime, a re-issue of the 1833 edition which was the first one-volume edition and first illustrated edition. Duodecimo, elaborately bound in three quarter morocco over marbled boards, gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments, all edges marbled, illustrated with engraved frontispiece and pictorial title by Pickering and Greatbatch dated 1833. In very good condition with some rubbing to the extremities, spine, and rear panel, light toning and minor offsetting to the pictorial title, and antiquarian ownership signature to the front flyleaf. Reprints ofÂBentley's standard novels are scarce. "So few of these reprints survive in libraries, and even fewer in original condition." (Gilson p. 225).

The success of George Allens " PEACOCK EDITION " launched Thompson's career as as a first class and prominent illustrator who is best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie. In total, Thomson illustrated sixty-five books and contributed a large number of illustrations to magazines and other periodicals. When working on a new illustration, Thomson would research his subject in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. He would often take detailed notes on costumes, furniture, old prints, and architectural records. His attention to detail can been seen in his sketchbooks, which include pages devoted to the changing styles of ladies and gentleman attire. Jane Austen born 16 December 1775 died 18 July 1817 was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels, which interpret, critique and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's novels remained in obscurity until this 1894 first illustrated edition was published. 61 different publishers reprinted her titles up to 2010 before the explosion of electronic reprint companies. Includes Austen's novels Sense and Sensibility;Pride and Prejudice; Mansfield Park; Emma; Northanger Abbey; and Persuasion as well as her short works and letters. Jane Austen December 16,1775 - July 18, 1817 was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary as well as her acclaimed plots have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. Austen's works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th century realism. Her plots, though fundamentally comic, highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. Her works, though usually popular, were first published anonymously and brought her little personal fame and only a few positive reviews during her lifetime.

Second printing of the 'Peacock Edition' of Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen, with stunning gilt cover design by Hugh Thomson. Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) renowned illustrator, in pen and ink, of classic titles; he was born in Ireland where his skills as an illustrator were recognised while still a teenager. Consequently Thomson was trained by John Vinycomb, the head designer at Marcus Ward & Co., a prominent Belfast publishing house. He subsequently moved to England, working from 1883 for MacMillan & Co., illustrating all six of Jane Austen's novels and other literary classics. By 1900 he had become one of the most popular illustrators of his time. However, during the First World War there was less demand for his style of work and he took a job with the Board of Trade until his untimely death from heart disease.
