The book presents a scholarly, philosphical, and historical analysis of the Psalms. The book is less devotional than some treatments of the Psalms, but gives a good overview of their importance and the different kinds of Psalms that are present in the collection of the 150 that appear in the Old Testament. Although the book itself is not devotion, it does emphasize their devotional importance for the Jews who put them into their Bible. The book also touches upon the possible inspirations for the Psalms, like the the neighboring tribes and how the Essenes had their own collection. The Psalms are shown to embody the depths of human religious experience. Some were hymns that were meant to sung. A few talk about nature. All in all, a readable book on the Psalms, with many of the Psalms included in the back.
