In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is the 1924 First Edition of "William Dean Howells - A Study" by Oscar W. Firkins. It was published by Harvard University Press. A handsome large octavo hardcover, the book is graced by a photogravure frontispiece portrait of Howells. The book has a generous Bibliography (of cours…e, only up to 1924), and is now out of print (OP). William Dean Howells (1837 - 1920) was a realist novelist, literary critic and editor of "The Atlantic Monthly". He was a prolific writer, and was dubbed "The Dean of American Letters". Today he is best remembered for the novels, "A Modern Instance" (1882), "The Rise of Silas Lapham" (1885), and "A Hazard of New Fortunes" (1889) . He knew many of the literary lights of his day, and was close friends with several, including Mark Twain, William James, Henry James, and Henry Adams. He was effective in nurturing new authors, such as Stephen Crane, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Frank Norris, Harold Frederic, and Sarah Orne Jewett. An excellent translator, Howells helped, through his criticism and essays, to establish the reputation of foreign authors in America, including Leo Tolstoy, Henrik Ibsen, and Emile Zola. Grant Gifford - (1924 - or - 1927 : you decide.] Gifford (1862 - 1949) was a well-respected doctor who worked and passed away in Pennsylvania. DETAILS : Trade hardcover; has a photogravure frontispiece (portrait of Howells in old age); the book has a generous bibliography and an index. 6 1/4" x 9 1/2"; maroon colored, cloth covered boards and spine, with gilt lettering, etc. on spine; top edge gilt; fore- and bottom edges are rough cut. CONDITION … This is a previously owned book that remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR — Spine extremities are compressed, with attendant moderate abrasion - a touch of fraying. Front and rear covers display modest surface rub , with , also, a touch of spotting. Board edges have scattered dents - one more serious dent, with an attendant small tear, has been neatly mended on the top edge of the front board. Bottom board edges have moderate shelf wear. Top edge gilding has a single long impact scratch, else is still fairly bright. Fore-edge and bottom edges are lightly toned, else clean. BINDING — Solid. INTERIOR — There is a strong bit of transfer toning at the gutter between pp 64 - 65 (Beginning of Chapter IV) this from what was obviously a bookmark laid in (no longer present). Otherwise the interior is clean and unmarked, but for the original owner's dated signature on the front free end-paper. End-papers are slightly toned. DUST-JACKET — Not present.
