The PyongyangMetro (MTR) (Korean: pyeong-yang jihacheol) is the metro system in theNorth Korean capital Pyongyang. It consists of two lines: the Ch¿llimaline runs from Kwangbok station in the southwest to Ragw¿n station inthe northeast, and the Hy¿ksin line runs north, from Puh¿ng station onthe banks of the Taedong to Pulg¿nby¿l station. The two lines intersectat Ch¿nu station. Daily ridership is estimated to be between 300,000 and700,000. Construction of the metro network started in 1968, and wasopened in September 1973 by former President Kim Il-Sung. In 1971, therewas a major accident during the construction of a tunnel under theTaedong River for the Ponghwa station.
