Sous l'envoi autographe adressé à l'abbé Batanchon, on peut lire cette mention manuscrite : "Donné à Gouteyron fils par son ancien instituteur en 1775, chanoine à Saint-Seurin" [ à Bordeaux]. Premier médecin inoculateur en Toscane, Angelo Gatti (1724-1798) arrive en France en 1761 où il reçoit un excellent accueil de la part des salons parisiens. L'abbé Morellet, qui lui servit de plume, fournira d'utiles précisions dans ses Mémoires : "Le docteur Gatti avait inoculé les enfans de M. Helvétius ; arrivant en France, et sachant fort peu notre langue, il avait besoin de trouver quelqu'un qui rédigeât et exprimât ses idées, neuves alors, et en même temps fines et justes. Il s'adressa à moi, et je me chargeai avec plaisir de ce travail. Je recueillais les notes qu'il me dictait en italien, ou qu'il m'envoyait en brouillons ; je les traduisais, je les développais, et surtout je les arrangeais pour en faire un tout à ma manière. Ces Réflexions furent goûtées du public et des gens de l'art ; et peut-être n'ont-elles pas peu contribué à établir et à perfectionner la pratique, même dans les mains de plus d'un médecin qui en avait dit beaucoup de mal. Gatti, né en Toscane, avait étudié sous le célèbre Cocchi ; il n'obtenait pas toujours des succès heureux, et on l'accusait de quelque légèreté dans son traitement. Il fallait le défendre dans la société, et je ne m'y épargnais pas. Mais les enfans de Me de Roucherolles ayant pris tous deux la petite vérole après avoir été inoculé par Gatti, qui avait assuré que l'inoculation avait eu tout son effet, il crut pouvoir expliquer son erreur ou la justifier ; et je rédigeai pour lui, vers de temps même, une lettre adressée au docteur Roux, notre ami commun, où il fait son apologie tellement quellement" (expression ancienne signifiant "Ni bien ni mal et plutôt mal que bien" selon la 4e édition du Dictionnaire de l'Académie) (Morellet, Mémoires, Tome I, 140 s.). Le Grand Larousse évoque de son côté l'inoculation des enfant du baron d'Holbach ; mais il est certain que Gatti fut un temps "l'inoculateur à la mode" dans le milieu des encyclopédistes.
