The elder Shook joined the Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Company in 1865 and stayed with it for more than 30 years, supervising its move from Tracy City, Tennessee, to Birmingham, along the way; included here are reprints of the elder Shook's "valuable notes on the firm's early history from its organization in 1852."
