"Last night, I dreamt I went to Manderley again." DU MAURIER, Daphne. Rebecca. New York: Doubleday, Doran, 1938. First American edition, first printing. Signed by Daphne du Maurier on publisher's tipped in sheet. Octavo ( 7 7/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 200 x 140 mm.). [vi], [1]-457, [1, blank] pp. Pages 387/388 with large repaired tear (no loss) and several other pages with short tears. Two ink signatures of former owners on front flyleaf. Rear flyleaf and paste down with pencil notes, etc. Publisher's maroon cloth with silver foil band at center printed in black. A good copy that shows very well and with the signature of Daphne Du Maurier. Daphne Du Maurier delivered the manuscript of Rebecca to her London publisher, Victor Gollancz, in April 1938. On receipt, the book was read in Gollancz's office, and her editor, Norman Collins, reported simply: "The new Daphne du Maurier contains everything that the public could want". Gollancz's reaction to Rebecca was relief and jubilation and a 'rollicking success' was predicted by him. He did not hang around and ordered a first print run of 20,000 copies which were published on 5th August, 1938. Within a month Rebecca had sold more than twice that number. The novel has been continuously in print since 1938. The first American edition was published a month later in September 1938. This 'gothic' novel depicts an unnamed young woman who impetuously marries a wealthy widower, before discovering that both he and his household are haunted by the memory of his late first wife, Rebecca. The novel has been adapted numerous times for stage and screen, including a 1939 play by du Maurier herself, the film Rebecca (1940), directed by Alfred Hitchcock, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The story is also a successful musical production. The novel is best remembered for the character Mrs. Danvers, the West Country estate Manderley, and its opening line: "Last night, I dreamt I went to Manderley again." Dame Daphne du Maurier, Lady Browning, DBE (1907-1989) was an English novelist, biographer and playwright. Her parents were actor-manager Sir Gerald du Maurier and his wife, actress Muriel Beaumont. Her grandfather was George du Maurier, a writer and cartoonist. Although du Maurier is classed as a romantic novelist, her stories have been described as "moody and resonant" with overtones of the paranormal. Her best-selling works were not at first taken seriously by critics, but they have since earned an enduring reputation for narrative craft. Many have been successfully adapted into films, including the novels Rebecca, Frenchman's Creek, My Cousin Rachel and Jamaica Inn, and the short stories "The Birds" and "Don't Look Now". Du Maurier spent much of her life in Cornwall, where most of her works are set. As her fame increased, she became more reclusive.

First edition of du Maurier's masterpiece which was later made into the Oscar-winning 1940 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. A beautiful example. From the first chapter: "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive and for a while I could not enter, for the way was barred to me". These famous opening lines later became one of the most famous opening words ever recorded in Alfred Hitchcock's Oscar-winning 1940 film of the same name. Rebecca is certainly Du Maurier's most famous novel and one that many others after her attempted to imitate, as a resurgence of romantic mystery novels came soon after its publication. The Mystery Writers of America have named Rebecca among the top ten Mystery Novels of All Time. 446pp. The classic gothic mystery which was the source for Hitchcock's haunting film. There are very few available copies with the original bookplate, not to mention signed. Bound in publisher's original black cloth with the book's title stamped in gilt. With original dust-jacket, very rare. In very good condition, The dust-jacket shows very light signs of shelf-wear, with very slight tearing at the top of the spine, and very small markings on spine and back of cover. The spine, however, is noticeably faded. Light foxing inside but pages are unmarked, clean and uncreased, with tight binding. Rebecca is a 1938 Gothic novel written by English author Daphne du Maurier. The novel depicts an unnamed young woman who marries a wealthy widower, before discovering that both he and his household are haunted by the memory of his late first wife, the title character. Rebecca sold 2.8 million copies between its publication in 1938 and 1965. It has been adapted numerous times for stage and screen, including a 1939 play by du Maurier herself, and the film Rebecca (1940), directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The book looks like it was originally owned by Joan Henry, an English author and former débutante; she was jailed for passing a fraudulent cheque in 1951 and her best-known works were based on her experiences in prison, the semi-autobiographical Who Lie in Gaol. Bertrand Russell, who was very fond of her, was her mother's first cousin. Her unusual name and her future connections to the publisher Gollancz seem to prove that this was indeed her copy - however we should mention that we could not find any recorded sample of her handwriting which could help us make comparisons with the ownership signature on the bookplate. Signed by Author(s).

Signed presentation inscription from the author to her governess "Tod, with love from Daphne. July 1938" to front free endpaper, light marginal toning and some foxing, upper hinge tinder, original cloth, slight shelf-lean, light fading to spine, spine with short split to head and fraying to foot, joints rubbed, dust-jacket, light fading to spine, spine ends and corners a little chipped, neatly repaired tear to head of upper panel, light creasing to head, extremities rubbed. A superb association copy inscribed from the author to her favourite governess in the month prior to publication. Signed copies of Rebecca are rare, we can only trace a handful at auction, we can find no like association copy. Maud Waddell worked as one of several governesses for the Du Maurier children and she is now regarded as having had an important formative influence on Daphne in particular. Waddell (or, "Tod" as she was nicknamed by the children after the Beatrix Potter character) was a strong, independently-minded woman who instilled in Du Maurier a passion for reading and encouraged her early writing. Writing in her memoirs, Du Maurier recounts some early influences from Waddell's recommendations: "Wilde filled my reading hours, but a more lasting impression was made by the stories of Katherine Mansfield, introduced to me by Tod who had a brother in New Zealand, and I felt instinctively that if I could only one day in the distant future write some sketch that might compare, however humbly, to hers, I need not despair." . Waddell later became a close friend and confidant, and would even serve as governess for Du Maurier's own children many years later. - Du Maurier, Myself When Young: The Shaping of a Writer, 1977. This is the must have book for serious collectors. Inscribed by Author.
