London: Victor Gollancz, 1938. 8vo., recently rebound in full green morocco with gilt borders; five raised bands, lettered and ruled in gilt to spine with gilt devices in compartments; pp. [vii], 6-446, [iv]; pages evenly toned, with some dark marks to the upper edge; a very good, sound copy. First edition. Rebecca is arguably Daphne Du Maurier's most loved works, and is a gothic tale which follows the story of the second wife of a wealthy Englishman attempting to build a life in the shadow of her former counterpart. In 1937, Du Maurier had signed a deal with publisher's Victor Gollancz, and had since her marriage in 1932 been toying with the idea of basing a novel around the theme of jealousy. She noted that her husband had been "engaged before â" to glamorous, dark-haired Jan Ricardo", and she retained suspicions that he was still attracted to her. In The Rebecca Notebook of 1981, du Maurier "'remembered' Rebecca's gestation . Seeds began to drop. A beautiful home . a first wife . jealousy, a wreck, perhaps at sea, near to the house . But something terrible would have to happen, I did not know what.". In her notes prior to writing she claimed "I want to build up the character of the first [wife] in the mind of the second.until wife 2 is haunted day and night.a tragedy is looming very close and CRASH! BANG! something happens.'"On completion, Du Maurier herself called it "a sinister tale⦠psychological and rather macabre", and parallels were drawn with both Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. Gollancz initially ordered a first print run of 20,000 copies, but within a month Rebecca had sold more than twice that number. It has been continuously in print since 1938.

Zustand: Very Good. First American edition. Octavo ( 7 7/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 200 x 140 mm.). [vi], [1]-457, [1, blank] pp. A Very good copy that shows very well and with the signature of Daphne Du Maurier. Pages 387/388 with large repaired tear (no loss) and several other pages with short tears. Two ink signatures of former owners on front flyleaf. Rear flyleaf and paste down with pencil notes, etc. Publisher's maroon cloth with silver foil band at center printed in black. Du Maurier's sensationally popular gothic novel is about the marriage between a young American woman and a rich, British widower, as they are haunted by the memory of his late-wife Rebecca. The book quickly became a best seller after its publication, selling close to three million copies in the thirty or so years after its release. The novel won a National Book Award in 1938 - when the award was voted on by booksellers, interesting enough - and came in 14th on the BBC's 2003 survey The Big Read. Rebecca has been adapted into radio, television, and film productions, and even an Opera. The most famous of these is, of course, Alfred Hitchcock's 1940 film, produced by David O. Selznick, and starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. It would be nominated for 11 Academy Awards and win two - including Best Picture and Best Cinematography. Daphne du Maurier, DBE (1907-1989) was an English author, known for her novels, biographies, and plays, born into an entertainment and literary family. Much of her work is haunting and hard to classify, bridging the romantic with the mysterious and sinister. Very Good.

Rebecca is a 1938 Gothic novel written by English author Daphne du Maurier. The novel depicts an unnamed young woman who marries a wealthy widower, before discovering that both he and his household are haunted by the memory of his late first wife, the title character. Rebecca sold 2.8 million copies between its publication in 1938 and 1965. It has been adapted numerous times for stage and screen, including a 1939 play by du Maurier herself, and the film Rebecca (1940), directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The book looks like it was originally owned by Joan Henry, an English author and former débutante; she was jailed for passing a fraudulent cheque in 1951 and her best-known works were based on her experiences in prison, the semi-autobiographical Who Lie in Gaol. Bertrand Russell, who was very fond of her, was her mother's first cousin. Her unusual name and her future connections to the publisher Gollancz seem to prove that this was indeed her copy - however we should mention that we could not find any recorded sample of her handwriting which could help us make comparisons with the ownership signature on the bookplate. Signed by Author(s).

July 1938" to front free endpaper, light marginal toning and some foxing, upper hinge tinder, original cloth, slight shelf-lean, light fading to spine, spine with short split to head and fraying to foot, joints rubbed, dust-jacket, light fading to spine, spine ends and corners a little chipped, neatly repaired tear to head of upper panel, light creasing to head, extremities rubbed. Signed copies of Rebecca are rare, we can only trace a handful at auction, we can find no like association copy. Maud Waddell worked as one of several governesses for the Du Maurier children and she is now regarded as having had an important formative influence on Daphne in particular. Waddell (or, "Tod" as she was nicknamed by the children after the Beatrix Potter character) was a strong, independently-minded woman who instilled in Du Maurier a passion for reading and encouraged her early writing. Writing in her memoirs, Du Maurier recounts some early influences from Waddell's recommendations: "Wilde filled my reading hours, but a more lasting impression was made by the stories of Katherine Mansfield, introduced to me by Tod who had a brother in New Zealand, and I felt instinctively that if I could only one day in the distant future write some sketch that might compare, however humbly, to hers, I need not despair." . Waddell later became a close friend and confidant, and would even serve as governess for Du Maurier's own children many years later. - Du Maurier, Myself When Young: The Shaping of a Writer, 1977. This is the must have book for serious collectors. Inscribed by Author.
