First Edition. The author distinguished himself during the Peninsular Wars, acted as the Duke of Wellington's Adjutant-General in 1809-12, and served as ambassador to Vienna, 1814-23. "The marquis hoped to be appointed as ambassador to Russia but was disappointed in his ambition. In 1836-37 he traveled to St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Odessa as a guest of his friends among the nobility. His account describes the social life of his hosts, their games, summer sports, entertainment and other activities." (Nerhood). He also comments on architecture, government, the Imperial Academy, the military, trade and commerce, mining, and the Russian North American colonies.
