In den WarenkorbCloth-backed boards. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Illustrated with three engraved plates, large quarto, pp xx, 420, edges untrimmed, some foxing and marking throughout, including the plates, original boards slightly worn, a later paper spine with the rather worn original paper label laid down, both paste-down endpapers wrinkled and lifting. [Apart from the foxing this is a stunning copy close to it's original state, wide-margined and unpressed. With the errata slip and directions to the binder at the rear. The subscriber's list accounts for 207 copies. There is an early London bookbinder's ticket on the front endpaper - H. Richards, Great Castle Street, Cavendish Square - and a manuscript note next to it "No 852" : might this suggest that there were a thousand copies printed ? Little is known of the author, an architect and surveyor of Furnivals Inn. His wife inherited half of her father's estate, and the development of North Street in London was pursued by the Scottish-born McWilliam. No buildings have hitherto been ascribed to him, apart from the handsome classically detailed terrace that is now Nos 2753 Northdown Street which was built in 1839 by McWilliam, who had plans in place for developing the entire estate by the time of his death in December 1842. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy, and his only public ation seems to be this one, dedicated to the 4th Duke of Gordon and subscribed for widely among members of the architectural profession. He became a Justice of the Peace for Middlesex towards the end of his life.]. …

DJ has shelfwear present, missing the lower 1'' inch of the DJ spine at the heel and a 1/4 inch chip to the crown of the DJ spine. Bound in black cloth boards with paper labels present to the spine and the front board. Boards have light shelfwear present. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Garet Garrett wrote one last, and truly spectacular, novel called Harangue (The Trees Said to the Bramble Come Reign Over Us). The words are from the Bible (Judges 9: 15, and the metaphor here refers to the strange penchant of the rich to fund socialism that kills the rich and consumes wealth. Garrett illustrates the strange tendency in a story of politics, economic folly, conspiracy, ideology, and violence. Published in 1926, it deals directly with the real-life attempt to create a Workers Paradise in the United States, in North Dakota from 1918 to 1921. The plot pits two socialist movements against each other in a battle for control. The I. W. W. Was the American movement of Reds socialist-'anarchists' who believed the violent strike would usher in utopia. Meanwhile, the Non-Partisan League was the American movement of pinks, the social democrats who wanted full socialism but with liberties (so long as they could be tolerated). They joined together to lay siege to the governor's office, and then nationalized the mills and the banks. They raised taxes, nationalized insurance and did a thousand other dangerous things that sank the economy and led to the recall of the governor. E-001; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.…

In den WarenkorbOctavo, publisher's black cloth, paper labels affixed to front and spine panels. First edition. "In a little room in Jones Street, New York City, a group of fiery young radicals meet and found the Freemen's League, which functions in a Middle Western State, elects its own political officers, unites the farmers, and fights the predatory railroad interests, the powerful bankers and the Boards of Trade. This biliiant novel describes one of the most daring and dramatic economic experiments ever presented in American fiction" (jacket flap). Garet Garrett (1878 - 1954), born Edward Peter Garrett, American journalist, author, economist, member of the "Old Right," was known for his opposition to the New Deal and U.S. involvement in World War II. "Garet Garrett wrote one last, and truly spectacular, novel called HARANGUE [THE TREES SAID TO THE BRAMBLE COME REIGN OVER US]. The words are from the Bible (Judges 9:15, and the metaphor here refers to the strange penchant of the rich to fund socialism that kills the rich and consumes wealth. Published in 1926, it deals directly with the real-life attempt to create a Workers Paradise in the United States, in North Dakota from 1918 to 1921 . Keep in mind that this novel, which closely tracks the real experience, was written in 1926! It surely must rank among the most prophetic novels of the 20th century. It certainly deserves to be ranked among Garrett's great works, not only for telling the history as it really happened but for imparting great socioeconomic lessons in the process" (Mises Institute). Hanna, Mirror for the Nation 1369. A fine copy in very good decorated dust jacket with light wear along top and bottom edges and just a bit of rubbing and scuffing. (#177095).…
