Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. 1st Edition. First edition hardcover, originally sewn-bound in brown half-cloth with marbleized boards, this volume has a new spine of black book-binding adhesive upon which has been carefully painted in white "Explorations for Railroads Route 1855" (see photo), is in Fair to Good condition, having some issues due to it's age: the original leather corners have disintegrated, the marbleized boards have much surface wear, and are in places missing; there is a small tear to top of spine at front cover join; there is much age-toning to pages, and foxing, with miscellaneous stains; there is some shaking to volume, and places such as between the lithograph illustration of Mount Pitt and page 69, where there the gutter shows the page edge is partially worn away; all of the illustrations mentioned (some colored lithographs) are present, although there is a small tear in the left side border of the lithograph of Quercus Hindsii. IMPORTANT: THERE ARE NO MAPS PRESENT, WHICH SEEM TO HAVE BEEN REMOVED. This is a tremendous work, chronicling the geology, botany, and zoology of the American western regions of the time, with, most importantly, information on the Native American Tribes of the regions. The colored (and non-colored) lithographs are very beautiful. Due to the weight and size of the volume, extra shipping cost may apply. DB.
