Grant, a notable event was the passage of the Ku Klux Klan Act on April 20, 1871, which provided federal authority to combat the group and enforce the 14th Amendment. The 1872 report by the Joint Select Committee on the Condition of Affairs in the Late Insurrectionary States documented widespread Ku Klux Klan violence aimed at suppressing the political rights of African Americans and their allies during Reconstruction.
