Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. 1st Edition. 2 volumes. Hardcover in original gray paper boards. Front board for the first volumes is missing, but the other three are present and firmly attached. The majority of the paper labels on the spines are present. Spines are lined with cracks in the paper from opening and closing the books. Still, not bad at all for the original 19th century paper binding. Pages untrimmed and wide-margined, filling to the edges of the boards. 596 and 539 pages. Some foxing and wrinkling from age. Both volumes have had a signature clipped from the title page (top corner) and then repaired with a blank corner. Both volumes have a 1902 ownership name on the front endpaper. Text blocks complete, but not as tight as we would like. The contemporary continuation of the story of the always infamous & recently hip A. Burr. He was acquitted at this trial, but it marked the end of his public life. HE went to England for most of the next decade, changed his name, and no one has made a musical about this part of his life. Other editions were produced in New York in 1841, and Mobile in 1842. In financial straits in his old age, Madison sold many of his papers, including his famous notes on the Federal Convention, to the Library of Congress. This collection constitutes the first printing of Madison's notes on the Constitutional Convention, which he insisted on keeping secret until after his death. They have become one of the key texts in modern constitutional debates over the intentions of the founders. The papers were published under the auspices of Henry D. Gilpin, who at the time was Attorney General of the United States. The first thirty pages of text in the first volume contain Thomas Jefferson's notes on the debate over the Declaration of Independence, while the plates in the rear of the final volume comprise an engraved facsimile of the fair copy of the Declaration of Independence in Jefferson's hand, as well as engraved signatures of the signers of the Constitution.
