First edition of an erudite and engaging study of early English history, containing the first printed account in English of "The Pied Piper of Hamelin", said to have been the source for Robert Browning's poem. The work was intended to correct the myth that England was founded by Brutus of Troy, demonstrating instead that the English derived from Germanic tribes. In doing so, it ranks among the earliest studies to challenge the erroneous belief that English culture and language stemmed primarily from pre-Saxon populations. The work contains a collection of curious facts, anecdotes, and myths about the Saxons and their customs, deities, and religious practices. Particularly noteworthy are the Old English dictionaries, including an etymological lexicon of old Saxon, incorporating a discussion of the werewolf and the case of Peter Stump, who was publicly executed in 1589. The fine illustrations, drawn and engraved by the author himself, show, among other subjects, Saxon deities, fossilised remains, scenes of Saxon migration to England, and the arrival of Christian missionaries. The story of the Pied Piper is included as one of the anecdotes. The edges of the boards are scuffed, the joints are weakened, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact, the boards and spine are slightly rubbed. The title page is slightly soiled, the leaves are somewhat browned and occasionally stained. Otherwise in good condition.l Pollard & Redgrave 21361; Simoni V 170 (defective copy); USTC 1436513; cf. ESTC S116255 (other issue). Contemporary or slightly later gold- and blind-tooled "Cambridge panel" binding in sprinkled brown calf, sewn on 4 supports with the corresponding raised bands on the spine, a red morocco title label on the spine lettered in gold, gold-tooled board edges, red sprinkled edges. With the title printed in red and black, an engraved vignette of the Tower of Babel on the title page, 10 engraved illustrations in the text, and a full-page coat of arms of the author at the end. Pages: [24], 338, [13], [1 blank] pp.

FIRST EDITION. title in red and black with engraved vignette of the Tower of Babel, engraved illustrations including armorial plate (2V2); various marks of ownership crossed through or excised, inscriptions cropping of marginal notes, final 2 leaves with damage to fore-margin without loss of text, rather browned in general with the edges of some leaves frayed; pp. [24], 338, [14], 8vo. [Bound with:] (William Camden) Remaines of a Greater Worke, Concerning Britaine, the Inhabitants thereof, their Languages, Names, Surnames, Empreses, wise Speeches, Poësies, and Epitaphes. At London: Printed by G. E. for Simon Waterson, 1605. pp. [8], 235, [1], 59, [1] 8vo. later seventeenth-century reverse calf binding, tooled blind; wholly well-used, it is rather worn and scuffed with chunks of leather lost around corners and board edges, evidence of earlier repairs, 'English Antiquities' in ink on the spine. This volume contains first editions of two important works of English historical scholarship. A Restitution of Decayed Intelligence disrupted the enduring foundational myths of England which centred on Brutus of Troy, foregrounding instead the literature, culture and society of the Saxons. Verstegan's object was to demonstrate the descent of the modern English from the Germanic peoples of northern Europe, and that the English language similarly originated with the Saxons. Amongst its many anecdotes, his Restitution includes the first account in English of the tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin (pp. 85-87), an episode which he dates to July 22 1376. Richard Rowlands, was, as a note to the title page here records, 'an English antiquary, born in London of Flemish parents'. His Catholic faith led to exile on the continent and he settled in in Antwerp, where he resumed his paternal name of Verstegan, set up a printing press, and acted as an agent for the transmission of Catholic literature. Dedicated to King James, Restitution is an enthusiastic paean to his country of birth. It was reprinted multiple times in the 17th century, and retained a prominent position in English scholarship for several decades. The second work here is Camden's Remaines, published some nineteen years after his magnum opus Britannia: '1605 produced another volume of material gathered from Camden's and Robert Cotton's libraries, the Remaines of a Greater Worke Concerning Britain. Camden did not put his name to it, identifying himself only by the final letter of each name, as M. N., but he dedicated it to Robert Cotton, suggesting his own ambivalence about a book that consisted of (as he wrote in the 'Epistle Dedicatorie') 'the rude rubble and out-cast rubbish of a greater and more serious worke'. If the Remaines is an ungainly, seemingly shapeless collection, it is also frequently witty and wise, and richly varied. Bringing together Camden's interest in literature and language, and social and cultural history, including both popular and high culture, the Remaines contains a wealth of material. Moreover, as a collection it reflects the unusual moment in the emergence of early modern Britain when the artefacts of the vernacular culture were coming to be valued in new ways. With the first historically organized anthology of medieval poetry, a historical and comparative study of the English language, collections of names and their meanings [.] it can be seen as a popular spin-off from its more expensive and serious historical mother lode, the Britannia [1586]. With two additional, enlarged editions in his own lifetime, seven throughout the seventeenth century, and several reprints thereafter, the Remaines remained a popular and useful work.' Together, these represent a particularly fecund moment of historical enquiry into the origins of England which set the tone for antiquarian researches of the later seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Second edition, first printed in England. 4to., pp.[xxiv], 338, [xii]. Title-page in red and black with large engraved vignette, woodcut initials head- and tail-pieces, many handsome illustrations in the text. Neatly pencilled bibliographical notes to ffep, few marginal notes in an older hand. Title-page a little foxed, occasional light ink blots and some spotting, a few pages with some light smudgy marks, eg. p.99. Trimmed a little close at head edge but never touching text. Later pale tan calf (probably late 19th c.), red and green labels to spine with date at foot wrongly put as 1828, blind tooled borders, edges coloured yellow, endpapers renewed. Headcap worn with small loss, some scuffs, joints worn with upper beginning to split at head, corners worn, frame of toning around free endpapers, still very good. To front paste-down the armorial bookplate of Hugh Robert Hughes of Kinmel, H.M. Lieutenant of Flintshire, obscuring a second bookplate beneath. Hughes (1827-1911), an avid collector of books and manuscripts on welsh history, topography and genealogy, purchased the collections of John Williams (1833-1872) of Beaumaris and Angharad Llwyd (1780-1866) of Caerwys (and later of Tyn-y-Rhyl), so the concealed bookplate may belong to one of these earlier collectors. Also to the paste-down is a small library label with shelf mark, and an ownership inscription of Brent Grafton-Maxfield dated 1972. An important work of early Anglo-Saxon scholarship originally published in Antwerp in 1605. Richard Rowlands (1548/50 1640), English-born Anglo-Dutch writer and intelligence informant, was forced to flee England in 1581 having secretly printed Thomas Alfield's account of the execution of Edmund Campion. It was during this time that he revived his ancestral surname of Verstegan. 'From March 1587 Verstegan lived in Antwerp. From 1590 until 1603 he worked as a publishing and intelligence agent for the superiors of the English mission, William Allen in Rome and Robert Persons in Spain. He maintained communications between them and the missionaries in England, arranged passports and the smuggling of books, bought books in Flanders for the seminaries in Spain, and oversaw the printing of numerous English Catholic works in Antwerp. He continued to write polemical and martyrological works, including, most importantly, answers to the 1591 proclamation against Jesuits and seminary priests. He also produced devotional translations (among them the first English translation of the Tridentine primer), religious verse, and a seminal work of Anglo-Saxon scholarship, the Restitution of Decayed Intelligence in Antiquities (1605), about which he corresponded with Sir Robert Cotton. He edited or contributed to several of the political works generally attributed to Robert Persons. His writings in these years were a cause of great concern to the authorities in England, and did much to shape the perception of Queen Elizabeth's policies on the continent.' (Arblaster, ODNB). 12 feuillets. 338 pages. 6 feuillets. (18x14 Cm). Plein cuir.

Second edition, the first printed in England following original publication in Antwerp in 1605, of this foundational work of Saxon scholarship. The work contains important material about the Saxons, their language, customs and folklore, some discussion of their Celtic predecessors, and the etymology of Saxon surnames and titles. The first edition contained the earliest recorded telling in English of the tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, which is retained in this edition. Historical scholarship prior to Verstegan continued to propagate foundation myths for England, portraying its appearance in history with the mythic founder Brutus of Troy, and held that its modern culture and language was rooted in the pre-Saxon inhabitants. Verstegan's object was to demonstrate, correctly, the descent of the modern English from the Germanic peoples of northern Europe, and that the English language similarly originated with the Saxons. Verstegan was also correct in his assertion that England was once connected to France by land, and that the coastline was not formed by Noah's Flood. Verstegan's account played an important role in moving historical understanding of England towards these conclusions. The work was reprinted multiple times in the 17th century, and retained a prominent position in English scholarship for several decades. ESTC S116256. Quarto (173 x 138 mm). With title vignette of Tower of Babel and 10 copper engravings in text. Early 19th-century vellum, twin brown morocco labels to spine, spine richly gilt with floral tools, gilt floral border to covers, marbled endpapers and edges. Bound without terminal blank. 19th-century ownership inscriptions to title page and a few minor early marginalia. Front joint skilfully repaired, contents a little browned, light staining at extremities of final leaves. A very good copy, attractively bound.
