Hard Cover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Limited Edition. Limited edition, #1283 of 1500 copies, signed by illustrator Clara Leighton on limitation page. Lacks jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, otherwise an excellent copy. 1929 Hard Cover. x, [4], 484, [2] pp. Tempestuous Eustacia Vye passes her days dreaming of passionate love and the escape it may bring from the small community of Egdon Heath. Hearing that Clym Yeobright is to return from Paris, she sets her heart on marrying him, believing that through him she can leave rural life and find fulfilment elsewhere. But she is to be disappointed, for Clym has dreams of his own, and they have little in common with Eustacia's. Their unhappy marriage causes havoc in the lives of those close to them, in particular Damon Wildeve, Eustacia's former lover, Clym's mother and his cousin Thomasin. The Return of the Native illustrates the tragic potential of romantic illusion and how its protagonists fail to recognize their opportunities to control their own destinies. Signed by illustrator.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Clare Leighton (illustrator). This is a limited first illustrated edition of fifteen hundred copies, 500 being for Britain and 1000 for the United States. It appears that the British edition was published by Macmillan and are un-numbered, while the United States edition is numbered and published by Harper. This copy is not numbered and is signed by the artist. The vellum spine is a bit worn and rubbed with a quarter- inch tear at the top of the spine. The decorated paper boards are rubbed along the edges with bumped corners, and the top edge gilt is a slight bit dull. Also, this copy was probably a graduation gift or prize, for at the bottom of the title page is written "Vassar Commencement 1929". Signed by Illustrator(s).
