Eindeutige Beweise blieb er jedoch schuldig (vgl. Arktis-Antarktis. Katalog Ausstellung, Bonn 1997/98). Dr. Cook schrieb sein Buch "Rückkehr vom Pol" handschriftlich nieder. Er begann die Niederschrift 1930 und vollendete sie 1935 im Alter von 70 Jahren (Vorwort). Die Erstausgabe erschien posthum (New York 1951).
