Softcover. Zustand: Good. The Second Edition of the Norton Critical Edition of Robinson Crusoe is based on the Shakespeare Head Press reprint of the first edition copy in the British Museum, with the "errata" listed by Defoes publisher, William Taylor, incorporated into the text. Michael Shinagel has collated the reprint with all six authorized editions published by Taylor in 1719 to achieve a text that is faithful to Defoe's original edition. Annotations assist the reader with obscure words and idioms, biblical references, and nautical terms."Contexts" helps the reader understand the novels historical and religious significance. Included are four contemporary accounts of marooned men, Defoes autobiographical passages on the novels allegorical foundation, and aspects of the Puritan emblematic tradition essential for understanding the novels religious aspects."Eighteenth-and Nineteenth-Century Opinions" is a comprehensive study of early estimations by prominent literary and political figures, including Alexander Pope, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Samuel Johnson, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, Edgar Allen Poe, Thomas Babington Macaulay, Charles Dickens, Karl Marx, and John Stuart Mill."Twentieth-Century Criticism" is a collection of fourteen essays (five of them new to the Second Edition) that presents a variety of perspectives on Robinson Crusoe by Virginia Woolf, Ian Watt, Eric Berne, Maximillian E. Novak, Frank Budgen, James Joyce, George A. Starr, J. Paul Hunter, James Sutherland, John J. Richetti, Leopold Damrosch, Jr., John Bender, Michael McKeon, and Carol Houlihan Flynn.A Chronology of Defoes life and work and an updated Selected Bibliography are also included.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Bound in worn paneled calf with front corners rounded, some calf missing from each panel. This being the first edition, second issue of the second book of the Crusoe saga from Defoe. This copy having the announcement for the printing of the 4th edition of the first book by Taylor and the threat of prosecution for pirated editions on the last page of the preface (A4), page 220 is numbered 120. This copy lacks original end paper at front with 1 leaf at rear, as well as the map. 373 pages of text with (xi) ads at rear. Pages show some old damp at fore edge and mild to moderate browning, but remain flexible, title page with old staining. There is a pencil notation on the fly signed "H.elt." stating this copy once belonged to Dr. W. Laidlaw Purves. Purves, in addition to being a golf aficionado, wrote a book questioning the authorship of Robinson Crusoe. The work was very popular, it was hastily printed to increasing demand creating textural difference ripe for conspiracy. Scarce.

The very rare second edition of the first German translation of Dafoe?s Robinson Crusoe and the equally rare first German translation of Tyssot?s ?La Vie, Les avantures, & le Voyage de Groenland? From a first glimpse the two works seemingly are unrelated whereas in reality they are a fine testament to the Robinson Crusoe-craze that swept through especially Germany in the first half of the 18th century, being one of the earliest, the first or second, example of the literary genre of Robinsonade - a genre that features stories with plots similar to that of Daniel Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe". These stories typically revolve around a character who is stranded in a remote or isolated location, often an uninhabited island, and must rely on their own ingenuity and resourcefulness to survive. Both works are rare in themselves. We have not been able to trace a single similar set at auction. ?Tyssot?s second novel (?La Vie, Les avantures?? here offered) enjoyed a great success in its day. There was only one French edition and whatever attention it attracted probably resulted from the sudden and widespread demand for desert island literature occasioned by the enormous popularity of Defoe?s Robinson Crusoe which was first published in 1719 and immediately translated into French and Dutch and, in the following year, into German. Tyssot?s novel was published in 1720 and was translated into German in 1721. According to Briiggeman, the title of the German edition was originally intended to be Reise um den Nordpol? but this was hastily changed to Des Robinson Crusoe Dritter und Vierter Theil? Perhaps this catch-penny title caused some demand for the novel in Germany although copies are now hard to find.?(Rosenberg, The Voyage De Groenland). ?The popularity of Robinson Crusoe in Germany is evidenced not only by the amazing number of editions of the work itself, some of which found in the collection have previously been commented upon but by the large number of imitations which almost immediately made their appearance. If, in attempting to define the term "Robinsonade," one emphasizes particularly solitary isolation from man's companionship with its "charm that has bewitched the world," as Charles Lamb describes the universal romantic appeal of the central theme of Robinson Crusoe then this genre is not large. Include, however, more than one person, and the growing colony of Crusoe easily becomes a Utopia. Transfer the realistic oceans, ships, islands, and cannibals of Defoe to the realm of the unreal, the simple scenery of Robinson Crusoe becoming the romance of the old wonder-filled travel and adventure stories (?).? (Some Imitations of Robinson Crusoe - Called Robinsonades, The Yale University Library Gazette, Vol. 11, No. 2, October 1936) ?The first German edition of Defoe?s anti-novel novel appeared in 1720 in Hamburg, published by T. von Wiering?s heirs. The translation was probably done by Ludwig Friedrich Vischer" ?Vischer? signed the translator?s preface and dated it March 26, 1720?only eleven months after the book had first been published by W. Taylor in London. The year 1720 also saw translations of Crusoe.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Small 8vo. Two volumes in uniform contemporary calf, raised spine bands, red leather spine labels with gilt title. Speckled edges. [iv], [1 folding map], 364, [4 pp. ads]; [viii], 348, [4 pp. ads]. Book 1 has famous engraved frontispiece portrait of Crusoe by Clark & Pine; book 2 lacks frontis (appears to have been present but removed per remaining stub) and map. Woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, and t.p. vignettes. Covers rubbed, wear to leather. Cracking to joints, chipping to spine ends (worse to book 2), wear to corners. Cracking to hinges. A few instances of browning, rust staining, ink smudging, pencil notation, but text blocks are otherwise remarkably clean. Some small spots of worming to publisher's list at rear of book 1. Some printing errors to and per catchwords in book 1 (pp. 23, 65, 82, 113, 178). One inch tear to outer margin and ink smudge to New Holland (Australia) to map. Publisher's adverts at rear of both volumes are incomplete per catchwords and bibliographies (4 of 11 pages only). Book 2 appears to be the second issue (two editions were printed with the same title page, but the third issue has only 318 pp.). Defoe's classic novel, written in the style of an epistolary autobiographical travelogue, chronicles the life and trials of a castaway on a tropical desert island. It is one of the most widely published books in history, with more translations than any other work except the Bible and a significant impact on literature. Its popularity enabled it to go through four editions in its first year of publication (1719), with the order for the second edition of the first book coming just seventeen days after the first printing of 25th April. The fourth edition of book 1 is the first to feature the map. The first edition of the second book came 20th August 1719, and the second issue of book 2 features advert to verso of A4 indicating the fourth edition of book 1 was "Just publish'd," so these copies were likely purchased at or around the same time. A very good rare early set of one of the most significant novels of early English literature. Hutchins 52-71, 97-112, 122-8; Moore 412 & 417; PMM 180; Rothschild 775. Provenance: Engraved armorial bookplates of Sir William Beauchamp-Proctor, 1st Baronet [1722-1773]. Proctor was a Member of Parliament for Middelsex from 1747-1768, and was the opponent of the radical John Wilkes in 1768, with Wilkes' defeat of the incumbent leading to the Middlesex election dispute of 1769. Also from the library of Dr. Theodore Heinrich [1910-1981], associate curator at the Metropolitan Museum, New York; director of the Royal Ontario Museum; professor of Fine Arts, York University. Heinrich served in the US Army during World War II, and remained in Germany after the war in connection with the recovery and restitution of looted works of art. In 1966, he began a full professorship at York University, which he held up to the time of his death. [University of Regina Library] [WITH] 6 pamphlets bound together in quarter hunter green leather, red title labels, gilt, raised bands, and marbled boards. Interior repairs include restored edges. Previous owner's old ink signature dated 1776 to top of title-page and first page of preface. A tiny hole to blank margin of leaf Z4. Free endpapers renewed. Overall an excellent copy of this set. Beginning with Captain William Dampier's enormously popular A New Voyage Round the World (1697; seventh edition 1729), English travel literature enjoyed a second Renaissance. Circumnavigators and privateersâ"Dampier and Woodes Rogers being preeminentâ"published accounts of their adventures. In at least three of the most popular instancesâ"Dampier (1697), Rogers (1712), and Edward Cooke, one of Roger's mates (1712)â"the frontispiece to their volume of voyages was a folding map, a planisphere by Herman Moll upon which a dotted line traced the route of the voyager. This then was the convention which lies immediately behind "A Map of the World on which is Delineated the Voyages of Robinson Cruso." Crusoe's folding planisphere has been attributed to Moll, but though it is similar to the map employed by Dampier and Cooke and is even closer to that employed by Rogers, it is not identical to either, and lacking an "H. Moll fecit," its origin remains indefinite. It first appeared in the first edition of The Farther Adventures; it was added to the fourth and later editions of The Strange Surprizing Adventures": (Newberry Library) "After twenty years of enormously prolific pamphleteering, political and sectarian, sometimes in verse, Defoe suddenly disclosed a genius for devising a tale of adventure. The special form of adventure that he chose, and even the name of his hero, have been adopted by countless imitators. This influence is not yet dissipated, for much of science fiction is basically Crusoe's island changed to a planet. At least equally relevant.is the figure of the lonely human being subduing the pitiless forces of nature; going back to nature, indeed, and portraying the ânoble savage' in a way that made the book required reading for Rousseau's Emile. Robinson Crusoe has long since been more widely read in the abridged versions for young people, in which his breast-beating and philosophizing are less prominent than the footprint in the sand, Man Friday, the threatening savages, and the endless ingenuity and contrivance that make the hero's life more tolerable. But the pious sections of the book are also relevant in the religious inferences drawn by Crusoe from his communings with nature" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Crusoe 250 27. Zustand: Near fine. Rare early set of the realist novel that transformed English literature, with the first volume a second edition and the second volume a first edition. Based in part on the celebrated narrative of castaway Alexander Selkirk, Defoe's novel is an adventure set in the New World that describes Crusoe developing self-reliant virtues in order to survive. Crusoe has become a modern mythic figure in the West: he is a hero of economic individualism on a modern Odyssey, born during the rise of English capitalism. Both entertaining and morally uplifting, the book represented an ideal formula in the early years of realist fiction; ROBINSON CRUSOE soon became an international bestseller, with more translations than any work except the Bible, and established a path for future novelists in the growing market for realist literature that matured in 18th-century England. It is often described as one of the earliest novels in English. First published in April of 1719, CRUSOE proved so popular that Defoe quickly published a sequel, THE FARTHER ADVENTURES OF ROBINSON CRUSOE, in August of 1719 (here in the first edition, with the May 1719 second edition of the first part). In 1720, he added a series of essays, SERIOUS REFLECTIONS DURING THE LIFE AND SURPRISING ADVENTURES OF ROBINSON CRUSOE, which is not typically printed with the main narrative of parts I and II today. This set has two copies of the famous frontispiece portrait of Robinson Crusoe, so iconic that, no matter the edition, "we always look for it and are disappointed when we do not find it" (A Edward Newton). Rare in any early edition, magnificently bound in the style of the period. Two octavo volumes, 7.25'' x 4.25''. Full speckled period-style calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-stamped spine, red and black goatskin spine labels. Red speckled edges. Volume I with engraved frontispiece by Clark & Pine (mounted on stub) and 2 pages of publisher's catalogue (of 4): [4], 364, [2] pages; volume II with additional frontispiece (same as volume I, not called for, trimmed and mounted in gutter), long ad on verso of A4, 1 page of publisher's catalogue (of 11), and engraved folding map bound at rear (mounted on stub): [8], 373, [1] pages. Envelope with 1908 purchase details of previous owner and complimentary documentation laid in.

An exceedingly rare and handsomely bound complete set of this cornerstone in English literature. Often hailed as the first novel in the English language and purportedly based on the experiences on Alexander Selkirk, who spent four years on the uninhabited island of Juan Fernandez from 1704, the adventures of Crusoe and his companion Friday have attained mythical status in the history of Western literature. The book's success was immediate, a second edition being called for only seventeen days after publication of the first on April 25, 1719, with a further two editions published before the end of year. The Farther Adventures appeared on August 20, and relates how Crusoe revisited the island with Friday. A final part, The Serious Reflections, followed in 1720. "The romance of Crusoes's adventures, the figure of civilized man fending for himself on a desert island, has made an imperishable impression on the mind of man. much of modern science fiction is basically Crusoe's island changed to a planet" (PMM).
