Early in his career, alongside artists like Frank Stella, Robert Mangold and Richard Tuttle, Gorchov experimented with the shape of the canvas and stretcher, eventually devising the saddle-like frame that has allowed him to make paintings that are sculptures as much as they are sites of image-making.
