Weniger durch seine geschätzten, jedoch wenig revolutionären Editionen als durch pädagogische Reformen, Umstrukturierung der philologischen Ausbildung und die Gründung des ersten deutschen Philologischen Seminars wirkte er als Erneuerer der klassischen Philologie in Deutschland. - Der Bruder des verstorbenen Verlegers Fritsch übertrug die Aufgabe einer neuen Edition der römischen landwirtschaftlichen Schriften Gesner, nachdem der Philologe Schöttgen sie nicht zustande gebracht hatte. Gesner wiederum stützte seine Arbeit, die erstmals 1735 erschien, hauptsächlich auf Piero Vettori (1542), fügte jedoch einige Ergänzungen hinzu. Eine zweite Ausgabe wurde nicht mehr von Gesner besorgt, enthielt allerdings weitere Zusätze, die in der vorliegenden Zweibrücker Ausgabe nicht wieder aufgenommen wurden. - Unser Exemplar OHNE den im Folgejahr erschienenen 4. Band mit dem Lexicon Rustico. Die Privateinbände gestaltet nach dem dem Vorbild zeitgenössischer Halbpergamentbände. Kanten schwach berieben, Schnitte mit Abdruck der modernen Schneidemaschine. Innendeckel teils schwach braunfleckig. Band 1 mit einigen schwachen Bleistiftmarkierungen, sonst innen hervorragend erhaltenes und sauberes Exemplar der umfassenden und interessanten Textsammlung. la Gewicht in Gramm: 1600 8° (19 x 12 cm).
