First edition thus (the Second Collected Edition). Hardcover. Page edges slightly foxed, back fixed endpaper a touch discoloured (from underlying binding glue), a couple interior pages with a bit of discolouration and a wrinkle, otherwise very good in fine dustjacket (sterling price intact). A nice copy of Murdoch's Booker Award winning novel. The first "Collected Edition" was published in 1984, in non-uniform jackets. This second "Collected Edition" in handsome uniform jackets (designed by Humphrey Stone, in marbled paper--different colours, same design-- by Compton Marbling), was published from 1990, closer to the end of the author's career, and presumably includes the 25 novels, from "Under the Net" to "The Message To The Planet" all in uniform appearance.

Publisher's original turquoise cloth with white titles to the spine and wrap around illustration in white and yellow, in the slipcase. Illustrated throughout in colour, with frontispiece and eight full page plates by Tatsuro Kiuchi. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the spine faded to aqua-marine. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed slipcase that remains structurally sound. Winner of the 1978 Booker Prize. The author's booker prize winning novel. - The book is in very good condition with a light push to the top and bottom of the spine which also has a crease running from top to bottom. Light bumps to the outside corners of the boards. Light sunning with a few marks to the page block which has pulled away from the spine slightly at the top. Internally, the front free end paper has some light indentations where it appears there has been some writing in pencil. The book is otherwise complete with no tears or other writing evident. - The dust jacket is also in very god condition and has not been price clipped. Light sunning across the jacket, particularly at the top of the flaps, with light ruffling and surface scratching bit otherwise a nice, complete example.

Byatt said They are so beautifully produced. They are a form of civilization. John Updike wrote, They are the edition of record. They are, unsurprisingly, being collected, and the first printings especially. This is one of them. It has a unique introduction by Sarah Churchwell. There is a fascinating chronology, a bibliography, and an elegant setting, as befits these two masterworks. A silk marker is bound in and the scarlet cloth binding has a black panel on the spine with the title in gilt. This copy has a mylar sleeved jacket, which is unclipped. An unread looking book, and a first edition thus.

The Sea, The Sea by Iris Murdoch is a philosophical novel that follows Charles Arrowby, a retired theatre director, who retreats to a secluded house by the sea to write his memoirs.
