First edition thus (the Second Collected Edition). Hardcover. Page edges slightly foxed, back fixed endpaper a touch discoloured (from underlying binding glue), a couple interior pages with a bit of discolouration and a wrinkle, otherwise very good in fine dustjacket (sterling price intact). A nice copy of Murdoch's Booker Award winning novel. The first "Collected Edition" was published in 1984, in non-uniform jackets. This second "Collected Edition" in handsome uniform jackets (designed by Humphrey Stone, in marbled paper--different colours, same design-- by Compton Marbling), was published from 1990, closer to the end of the author's career, and presumably includes the 25 novels, from "Under the Net" to "The Message To The Planet" all in uniform appearance.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. These superb and elegantly designed books were relaunched in 1991, to great praise. A. S. Byatt said They are so beautifully produced. They are a form of civilization. John Updike wrote, They are the edition of record. They are, unsurprisingly, being collected, and the first printings especially. This is one of them. It has a unique introduction by Sarah Churchwell. There is a fascinating chronology, a bibliography, and an elegant setting, as befits these two masterworks. A silk marker is bound in and the scarlet cloth binding has a black panel on the spine with the title in gilt. This copy has a mylar sleeved jacket, which is unclipped. An unread looking book, and a first edition thus.

A first edition, first printing of The Sea, The Sea by iris Murdoch, published by Chatto and Windus, London in 1978. A near fine copy signed in black ink to the front free end paper by a previous owner, slight bumping to head and foot of the spine, some browning and spotting to text block. In a near fine unclipped wrapper with chipping to spine tips and knuckles of front and rear flap folds. The Sea, The Sea by Iris Murdoch is a philosophical novel that follows Charles Arrowby, a retired theatre director, who retreats to a secluded house by the sea to write his memoirs. However, his peaceful solitude is disrupted when he encounters his first love, Hartley, leading to an obsessive pursuit to rekindle their past. As Charles grapples with love, jealousy and delusion, Murdoch explores themes of ego, morality and the complexities of human relationships in this richly layered narrative. Winner of the 1978 Booker Prize, the novel has been adapted for television and radio productions over the years.
