Zustand: As New. 1st ed ; Di 1 ban ?1? ; 26 volumes AS NEW ; A collection of 9 of the 15 novels from the Collected Works edition of Jin Yong's world-famous martial arts fiction, all of which have been used as the bases of films many times over ; includes Sword Stained with Royal Blood (1956) [Bi xue jian ???], The Return of the Eagle Heroes (1959) [Shen diao xia lu? ????], Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain (1959) [Xue shan fei hu ????], The Young Flying Fox (1960) [Fei hu wai zhuan ????], Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre (1961) [Yi tian tu long ji ?????], Requiem of Ling Sing (1963) [Lian cheng jue ???], Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils (1963) [Tian long ba bu ????], Way of the Heroes (1965) [Xia ke xing ???], Deer and the Cauldron [Duke of Mount Deer] (1969) [Lu ding ji ???] ; Jin Yong was born in Hangzhou, a native of Haining, Zhejiang province. He was admitted to the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Chunking Central University and then transferred to the Faculty of Law of Dongwu University majoring in International Law. He was an English translator at Ta Kung Pao newspaper and subsequently moved to Hong Kong with the newspaper and worked as a copy editor at Ta Kung Pao and Hsin Wan Pao newspapers. At this time he also took on the job as scenarist-director at the Great Wall Movie Enterprises Ltd. and Phoenix Film Company in the late 1950s, focusing on play writing, and in 1955 he began to write swordplay fiction. In the meantime he started the Ming Pao Daily News with Shen Baoxin in 1959 acting as its director. Since 1966, he has expanded his publishing network considerably. The immense popularity of his martial-arts novels continues unabated, having sold more than 1 billion copies, making him the most popular living Chinese author. He has more than redefined the genre. Critic Simon Elegant has compared the power of the novels to a Chinese Three Musketeers, a Patrick O'Brian naval series and George MacDonald's Flashman combined. ; "Kung fu, together with Chinese medicine, calligraphy, painting, playing Go and strumming the seven-stringed zither constitute the core of the Chinese cultural essence. All these elements appear in the novels, and their placement firmly in the myth-shrouded past combine to produce a kind of 'cultural euphoria' in Chinese readers that cannot be found anywhere else in modern Chinese literature."--John Minford. ; in multicolored pictorial dustjackets with classic watercolor scenes, color-coded by novel, and stiff paper wrappers ; text in Chinese, with many illustrations; Paginations: Bi xue jian ???, 2 v. Qiao Feng is one of the three protagonists in Jin Yong's Wuxia novel Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils. Xiao Feng is a Khitan by birth and he is from the same clan as Empress Xiao of the Liao Dynasty. When he was still an infant, his parents brought him on a journey to the Song Dynasty's territory in the south, but the family is ambushed by a group of masked pugilists at Yanmen Pass. Xiao's mother is brutally killed while his father, Xiao Yuanshan, continues to battle the attackers but suffers grave wounds. Xiao carves a message in the Khitan language on a rock before committing suicide by leaping off a cliff, carrying his wife and child with him. However, Xiao regrets as he falls and he tosses his son up the cliff, before apparently plunging to his death below. The infant Xiao Feng is saved by the attackers, who are reluctant to kill an innocent child, and they entrust him to the care of a peasant named Qiao Sanhuai. Qiao and his wife adopt the infant and name him 'Qiao Feng'.

Chapters: The Deer and the Cauldron, The Smiling, Proud Wanderer, Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber, Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain, Other Tales of the Flying Fox, A Deadly Secret, The Book and the Sword, The Legend of the Condor Heroes, The Return of the Condor Heroes, Sword Stained with Royal Blood, Swordswoman Riding West on White Horse, Blade-dance of the Two Lovers, Ode to Gallantry, Sword of the Yue Maiden. Excerpt: The Deer and the Cauldron, also known as The Duke of Mount Deer, is a novel by Jin Yong, and also the last of Jin Yong's works. Although the book is often termed as a wuxia novel, it is not archetypal of the genre, since the protagonist of the book is not a skilled martial arts practitioner and instead relys on his wits to get out of trouble rather than martial skills. The novel is initially published as a serial, and ran between October 24, 1969 to September 23, 1972 in Ming Pao. The choice of the novel's title is alluded to in a section in the first chapter, in which a scholar has a conversation with his son. The scholar recounts that both the deer and the cauldron serve as metaphors for the Central Plains and the Chinese empire. It is written in volume 92 of the historical text Book of Han, 'The deer lost by Qin was hunted by all under Heavens ('--'), an illustration of the rise of numerous rivalling warlords contesting for supremacy to capture the prize, the empire lost by the Qin Dynasty. During the Zhou Dynasty, there were the Nine Cauldrons, symbolic of the Divine Mandate of rulership. Zuo Zhuan recorded an account where the ruler of the most powerful Chu state enquired the weight of the cauldron from a Zhou minister. This sent a clear signal that he was coveting the rulership of the empire technically possessed by the king of Zhou. The title refers to the novel's background where the Han Chinese subjects of the fallen Ming Dynasty struggle to restore their former empire by opposing the Manchu-ruled Qing Dynasty. The story centers on a witty, sly, illiterate and lazy protagonist, Wei Xiaobao, who was born to a prostitute from a brothel in Yangzhou during the Qing Dynasty. The teenage scamp makes his way from Yangzhou to the capital city Beijing through a series of adventures. In Beijing, he is kidnapped and taken to the Forbidden City where he impersonates a eunuch. While in the palace, Wei Xiaobao bumbles his way into a fateful encounter.
