Part of the series 'Deutsche Lande Deutsche Kunst' which was founded by Burkhard Meier. Apparent First Edition as there is no reference to a later edition. This is a quite special book---in the photo y…ou can see the printed and signed letter from the Mayor of Bremen (who was also the President of the Senate) Wilhelm Kaisen to the former Assistant Secretary of War and U.S. High Commissioner to Postwar Gerrmany, John J. McCloy. In addition, you can see that Mr. Kaisen attached a written note to McCloy from the new U.S. Ambassador to West Germany, James Bryant Conant. The note is on Conant's personal card. If you can't make it out Conant thanks McCloy for your 'understanding yesterday in introducing me as ambassador.' I purchased this book directly from the home of John J. McCloy. You can see the covers in the photos. They are quite clean. The spine lettering is nicely bright. The gilt background on the spine looks good. The cover edges are in very good shape, no rubbing. There is one tiny crease below the front top corner, but the corner looks very good. There is no rubbing at any of the four corners. The only cover flaw is that both covers clearly bow outward. Nevertheless, the book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. There is one small, thin spot with a small tear at the juncture between the front inside cover and front end paper (see photo). Same thing just off the bottom edge of this juncture, visible if you look from the side, both quite minor and having no impact on the binding. The text pages are very clean. I don't see any soiling. They are toned, particularly off the edges. There are a number of drawings and a large map. The plates in the Die Bilder section are also exceptionally clean. I'm not finding any soiling at all. All of the photographs look perfect. The white margins that surround the photographs do have light toning. The paper in this section is semi-glossy. There are 72 pages of plates. I'm not seeing any creasing on any the pages in either the text or plate sections. There are no markings on any of the pages. There are no attachments. And there is no writing in the book itself, just the signature on the attached paper and the writing on the card. Signed.
