No Jacket. 1863 printing hardcover, sewn-bound in quarter-bound black leather with brown stamped boards, and gilt lettering on spine, is in G condition, having much wear to the leather spine (looks like ancient black veneer over leather) that show some; wear, with some of the black wearing off--see photo); corners slightly bumped and worn; both endpaper sections have some rubbing and wear; former owner has written their initials (J.T.B.) on first free endpaper; very small crack on first fixed endpaper near hinge, while both sections show some slight stressing revealing the thread underneath; some of this same thread stressing noticed throughout interior, with a section between p. 139 and p. 158 almost detached. All in all, a book this age is in much better shape than would be expected, especially for a school textbook. Book primarily extracts from American and British writing, with sections ranging from a part of "Rip Van Winkle" by Washington Irving, to a speech given by Daniel Webster on the slave trade.
