Early paired Smithsonian memoirs by Charles Whittlesey combining a foundational field survey of Ohio's prehistoric earthworks with a pioneering statistical study of Great Lakes level fluctuations. Charles Whittlesey's Descriptions of Ancient Works in Ohio is an early systematic archaeological survey of the prehistoric earthworks of the Ohio Valley. Prepared from field examinations conducted in the late 1830s and 1840s during his service with the Geological Survey of Ohio, the memoir records in measured detail a wide range of mound-builder constructions, including circular and elliptical enclosures, graded ways, fortified hilltops, stone mounds, and extensive ditch systems across numerous Ohio counties. Whittlesey (1808-1886), a West Point-trained geologist and assistant on the Ohio Geological Survey, was among the earliest systematic investigators of Ohio's prehistoric earthworks, an interest that emerged directly from the state's first geological surveys in the late 1830s. Whittlesey's purpose was strictly documentary: to examine known sites, verify earlier reports, and supply accurate plans and measurements for future investigators. The work preserves primary data for monuments already threatened by cultivation and urban growth-he notes, for example, that several Cincinnati works had been destroyed by the time of writing-and was conceived as a supplement to the Smithsonian investigations of E. G. Squier and E. H. Davis within the broader mid-nineteenth-century effort to record the Ohio mound complexes. The study is illustrated with a substantial series of engraved plates depicting site plans, sectional profiles, and topographical relationships. These scaled visual documents-covering sites in Pike, Warren, Clermont, Licking, Medina, Summit, Lake, and other counties-are central to the work's value, as many of the monuments shown were later damaged, altered, or destroyed. Bound with is Whittlesey's later memoir On Fluctuations of Level in the North American Lakes, a statistical investigation of long- and short-term water-level changes in the Great Lakes. Prompted by the notable rise of 1838, Whittlesey assembled observational data from engineers, harbor works, and other observers, distinguishing secular trends, annual seasonal oscillations, and sudden transient fluctuations. Extensive comparative tables from Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, Black Rock, and related stations represent an early attempt to treat the Great Lakes as an interconnected hydrological system, with direct implications for navigation, canal engineering, and harbor construction. Together, the two papers illustrate the breadth of Whittlesey's scientific work and form an early Smithsonian contribution to both American archaeology and Great Lakes hydrography.
