In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The origins of the idea to write this book are impossible to trace. What I can say with some certainty, is that the book would not have emerged without the pleasing interplay of two contingent pleasures which occurred in the summer of 1978. The first was the penetrating sense of awe experienced when I finished reading Koestler's recent book' Janus A Summing Up', 1978. His philosophy provided that necessary inspiration to tackle, in a rational way, a long held dissatisfaction with the . conven tional Darwinian explanation of evolution. The second was the more subliminal pleasure of camping and exploring that beautiful panorama of the lake district of Northern Ontario. The book, written in an argumentative style, reviews the case for the inheritance of acquired characteristics and proposes a simple, feasible mechanism to drive this process. It is written from the narrow perspective of an experimental Immunologist with an interest in the evolution of multicellular organisms. Much attention is given to current ideas in Immunology, and at times we dive deeply into its heartland to grasp those threads relevant to a general theory of evolution. In these excursions, I take pains not to lose the general reader (although I run the risk of annoying some Immunologists), I do this so that the argument is understood by Biologists as a whole. This narrow approach path, however, eliminates areas of interest to some Biologists, e. g.

First published 1979; this is the 1981 2nd Edition, 1st Printing w/a new Postscript from author. Fascinating reveiw of E.J. Steele (1744 - 1829), early proponent of the idea that biological evolution, from studies of plants, can & do, occur in plant life, separately from use of DNA, following natural laws --- that is, if plant organisms transmit "acquired characteriscs" during their lifetimes to their offsprings hwat of that of that of animal life???

Wilson's name stamp on fore-edge; laid in is a page of the journal "Nature", 20 November 1980 with a review of this book and Wilson s note: 1 copy please . Also laid in is a page from the March 22, 1981 "New York Times" with a lengthy article by Sir Peter Medawar, The View from the Heights of Immunology , and a postscript, New Evolutionary Mechanism , that addresses the recent Steele findings that an acquired immunological adaptation of mice could be passed on to their progeny Medawar s lab was unable to reproduce Steele s results, but that the people repeating his work were somewhat prejudiced; they would have liked to have found his story to be true, for this would have made us rethink our conventional ideas about the mechanism of evolution. In Very Good condition.
